Resident Evil Fans Think They’ve Figured Out Who Leon Is Married to, and I Hate the Idea So Much

The Resident Evil series has a dedicated fanbase who enjoy its suspenseful and scary stories. But for some fans, the relationships between the characters are just as important, particularly the possibility of romantic connections. This is especially true for Leon, who is a popular character among players and even those who make the games, leading to a lot of discussion about his potential love interests.

Fans have been arguing for years about who Leon should end up with, and the discussion got even more intense when it seemed like he’d secretly gotten married. While we don’t know who his spouse is, some believe deleted content from the Resident Evil 4 remake offers clues that it’s someone we already know. Personally, I hope this theory isn’t true, as I think it would negatively impact the series and spoil a potentially great character arc.

Resident Evil Fans May Have Found Proof That Leon Married Ashley

Fans of the Resident Evil series are buzzing about a detail from the latest game, Resident Evil Requiem. A final scene shows Leon S. Kennedy wearing a wedding ring, leading many to believe he secretly got married sometime after the events of previous games. This has sparked a lot of debate about who his wife could be, with popular guesses including Claire Redfield, his partner from Resident Evil 2, and Ada Wong, a frequent romantic interest known for being unpredictable.

Fans have discovered cut content from the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 that supports a different theory about Ashley Graham. A photo in Ada Wong’s office, visible in the “chainsaw demo,” appears to show an older version of Ashley. Capcom removed this photo from the final game, implying they didn’t want players to see this future depiction of her. Interestingly, the photo portrays Ashley as a regular civilian, rather than someone actively involved in the dangerous missions seen throughout the Resident Evil series, suggesting a connection to characters like Leon but not as an agent herself.

The photo has sparked new theories that Ashley and Leon maintained a close relationship as adults, and might have even gotten married. Many fans are excited by this possibility, considering the strong connection they shared in Resident Evil 4. It would also mark Ashley’s first significant return to the series since a quick cameo in Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness. Although it would be great to see her again, I hope her return isn’t framed around this romantic storyline.

Resident Evil Shouldn’t Pair Off Ashley And Leon

While some fans would be pleased to see Ashley and Leon become a couple, it would likely disappoint many others – not just those who hoped for a different romantic pairing. Giving Leon a stable relationship would dash the hopes of fans who wanted him with Ada or Claire. Beyond the disagreements among fans, pairing Leon and Ashley romantically feels thematically off to me. Their relationship in Resident Evil 4 is built on Leon protecting Ashley, and adding romance would feel forced and untrue to their original dynamic.

The romantic connection between Leon and Ashley felt weak, both in the original game and the remake. A much stronger romantic dynamic existed between Leon and Ada. Furthermore, the idea of Leon falling for Ashley because he rescued her feels uncomfortable, as it reinforces the outdated and problematic trope of winning a woman’s affection as a reward for saving her – a trope that many modern games avoid. Even though I don’t strongly prefer either of the pairings of Leon with Ada or Claire, I believe Leon had better chemistry with both of them than with Ashley.

Leon often falls into a protective role with younger women, acting almost like an older brother or father figure – we see this with Grace in Resident Evil Requiem and with Sherry Birkin in Resident Evil 2. If Leon were to marry someone he previously protected, even after she’s grown up, it would create an uncomfortable dynamic that complicates his character unnecessarily. While revisiting an older Ashley in the future could be interesting, I hope it’s not in the role of Leon’s wife. I’d prefer he doesn’t end up with her romantically.
