Is this the film to win Tom Cruise Best Actor Oscar….finally

Tom Cruise has been nominated for an Oscar three times previously – for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and a supporting role in Magnolia, which many felt he deserved to win. He also received an Honorary Oscar in November 2025. Recently, at CinemaCon, a preview of director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s new film sparked discussion: could this finally be the movie to earn Tom Cruise his first Best Actor Oscar?

So is this the film to win Tom Cruise Best Actor Oscar?

The movie, called ‘Digger,’ features Tom Cruise looking drastically different with a Southern accent, a bit of a belly, and a receding hairline covered by a comb-over. He plays an oil tycoon whose actions might have caused a huge environmental problem that could even lead to nuclear war. John Goodman plays the sick U.S. president who asks Cruise’s character to resolve the crisis.

Many believe Tom Cruise deserves to win the Best Actor Oscar this year, and there’s a pattern that suggests he might. In 1980, Henry Fonda received an honorary Oscar and then won Best Actor the following year for On Golden Pond. Similarly, Paul Newman got an honorary award in 1985 and won Best Actor the next year for The Color of Money, a film that also starred Cruise. So far, Cruise seems to have very little competition, with Jeremy Strong’s performance as Mark Zuckerberg in the sequel The Social Reckoning being the only potential challenge.

Maybe its a bit of a reach but maybe Digger is  the film to win Tom Cruise Best Actor Oscar.
