Why Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum Might Be an Awkward Watch

The latest news about who’s been cast in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum could make watching the film a bit strange.

Next year, Warner Bros. will release a new movie called The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum in U.S. cinemas. Andy Serkis, famous for playing Gollum in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, is directing the movie and will return as the character of Gollum.

Why might The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum be weird to watch?

I was so excited to hear the casting news for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ at CinemaCon! We already knew Ian McKellen was coming back as Gandalf, and Kate Winslet was joining the cast, but now they’ve announced Jamie Dornan will be playing Strider – you probably know him as Aragorn. It’s a big role, of course, since Viggo Mortensen famously played him in the original trilogy, and I’m really curious to see what Dornan brings to it.

Okay, so this is huge news for a lot of us fantasy fans! Deadline is reporting that Elijah Wood is officially coming back as Frodo, which is amazing. And Lee Pace will be returning as the Elvenking Thranduil – yes! Plus, Kate Winslet is joining the cast as a character called Marigol. I’m already excited to see what she brings to the role!

As a big fan, I’m really excited about the new Lord of the Rings film! But I’m also a little worried about how it’ll all come together. The original trilogy is so special to so many of us, and we all secretly hoped to see some of those familiar faces again. While it’s great that some of the original cast are returning, the idea of a new actor playing Aragorn feels a bit strange. It’s uncharted territory, and I’m curious to see how they’ll blend the old and the new. We don’t know much about the story yet, but it definitely feels like a risk.

There’s a chance the story of Aragorn will be told entirely through flashbacks, meaning Jamie Dornan might not share scenes with Frodo or Gandalf. However, fans are very used to Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, and it’s uncertain if another actor could recreate that same impact. Even without scenes alongside Ian McKellen or Elijah Wood, seeing a new face in such a well-known role within a film filled with familiar characters could feel a bit strange for viewers.

Andy Serkis seems to be aiming for a similar approach to Robert De Niro in The Godfather: Part II, where we saw a younger version of a key character alongside the ongoing story of the original cast. That’s a very ambitious goal, though, and it’s fair to wonder if The Hunt for Gollum can really reach that same level of quality. We’ve seen similar attempts fall short before, so it’s a valid concern.

Fans will discover what’s in store with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum when it’s released on December 17, 2027.
