January 1 Will Officially Mark an Unfortunate Milestone for The Elder Scrolls 6

Don’t expect to see The Elder Scrolls 6 released anytime soon – it’s likely several years away. It won’t be launching in January, a date that holds some importance for previous Elder Scrolls games.

Man, it feels like forever ago that they first announced The Elder Scrolls 6! It was back at E3 2018, just a tiny little teaser trailer, and honestly, it was way too early to show anything. A lot’s changed since then – even E3 is gone! – but we still haven’t gotten another glimpse of the game. Recently, Todd Howard even said he regrets announcing it so early, which, honestly, I get. We’re all still waiting patiently (or not so patiently!) for more news.

Release Dates in The Elder Scrolls Franchise

  • The Elder Scrolls: Arena Release Date – March 25, 1994
  • The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall Release Date – September 20, 1996
  • The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind Release Date – May 1, 2002
  • The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Release Date – March 20, 2006
  • The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Release Date – November 11, 2011

On January 1st, more time will have passed since the release of Skyrim and the still-unreleased The Elder Scrolls 6 than had passed between Skyrim and its predecessor, Daggerfall. While it might be unexpected, Daggerfall came out in September 1996, and Skyrim in November 2011 – a difference of 5,530 days. By January 1st, the same number of days will have passed since Skyrim‘s launch, and each day after will only widen the gap. Fans on Reddit, like one user named Repulsive-Canary-772, are jokingly mourning the date, hoping Bethesda will celebrate the long wait with a trailer. But the story doesn’t stop there.

The original poster also pointed out that if The Elder Scrolls 6 isn’t released before June 29, 2029, the gap between Skyrim and TES6 will be longer than the gap between the very first Elder Scrolls game (Arena, released in 1994) and Skyrim. Basically, we could end up waiting longer for the sixth main Elder Scrolls game than we did between the first and fifth. As of today, it’s been over 2800 days since TES6 was first announced, and that number will reach 3127 by January 1st.

Two comments on Repulsive-Canary-772 perfectly capture the feelings of Elder Scrolls fans. One user, AdhesivenessOK4334, wrote, “Nah, it won’t happen…it won’t…”, and this comment has sparked a lot of discussion with 581 replies, showing many fans still hold out hope for a new game. Another user, Any_Middle7774, confidently stated, “It absolutely will.”, which has 504 replies and seems to represent the divide among fans regarding when the next installment might arrive.

The Elder Scrolls series hasn’t been completely stagnant; Skyrim has been re-released several times, and Oblivion Remastered came out in 2025. However, fans have been waiting a long time for news about The Elder Scrolls 6, and many feel a new installment is long overdue.
