With the long-awaited return of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, fans are already wondering what happened to the characters after the original series ended. Malcolm in the Middle was a hilarious show that ran from 2000 to 2006, and the revival has been highly anticipated ever since it was announced. After nearly 20 years, it’s exciting for many of us to reconnect with Malcolm and his family and see what their lives look like now, following the events of the Season 7 finale.
Although most reviews of the Malcolm in the Middle revival have been very positive, it doesn’t quite resolve some long-standing mysteries. Both the original series and the new episodes leave viewers with unanswered questions that have puzzled fans since the show ended in 2006, and many are still hoping for closure.
What Is Malcolm and His Family’s Surname?

It’s frustrating that the new season of Malcolm in the Middle doesn’t clarify the family’s last name, but many fans probably wouldn’t want to know it anyway. The original series briefly showed the name Wilkerson on Francis’s uniform, but later changed it to ‘Nolastname.’ The revival continues with ‘Nolastname’ on Jamie’s uniform, yet Disney’s promotional materials sometimes refer to them as the Wilkersons, creating confusion about the family’s official surname.
How Did Malcolm Manage as a Single Father in College Without His Family Knowing?

One confusing part of the potential Malcolm in the Middle revival is the storyline of Malcolm raising his daughter, Leah, on his own. While flashbacks show he occasionally saw his family, it’s unclear who cared for Leah during his absences. Her mother left when Leah was just three days old, and it seems strange that Malcolm would leave a young child unattended for days, even with the help of friends. It also doesn’t quite add up that he could successfully raise a child while juggling college, multiple jobs, and finishing his degree.
What Happened to Cynthia and Jessica?

It’s strange that Tania Raymonde, who played Cynthia on the original Lost, and Hayden Panettiere, known as Jessica from Scream, aren’t included in the Malcolm in the Middle revival. Both characters were significant in the original series and were, at one point, romantically involved with Malcolm. Their departures feel quiet, and it’s unusual that neither is even mentioned during the revival – especially Jessica, who practically lived with the family in later seasons. The revival briefly hints that Jessica became a French teacher and possibly attended Harvard with Malcolm, but this isn’t confirmed. Cynthia doesn’t even get a mention. The original show suggested she transferred schools after a misunderstanding with Malcolm, but that storyline is also left unresolved.
Are Lois and Hal Still Having Money Troubles?

A key element of the original show was the family’s constant struggle with money. Though they always had a home, Lois and Hal often had trouble affording even basic necessities, all while raising six kids in a small house. They were always living paycheck to paycheck. The revival seems to suggest they’re more financially secure, but it’s not so clear. Lois mentions using all their savings for their anniversary party, something the original show’s family would never have done. Now that they’re supposedly retired, it doesn’t quite add up – they still have a child at home, and it seems unlikely their pensions could cover everything: supporting their family, renovating the house, and throwing such a lavish party.
Does Reese Still Live With Craig?

Okay, so revisiting the Malcolm in the Middle finale… it really left Reese’s story hanging, didn’t it? Lois was so focused on getting him out of the house with Malcolm heading to college, and he ended up moving in with Craig after taking a job as a school janitor. The way it ended with those two was…strange. They were still friends at the end of the show – or at least, they said they were, right before that bathroom mess – but we never really got a clear answer about whether they continued living together. The revival series doesn’t offer much clarity on Reese’s life, just a few mentions of his job failures, relationships, and a failed YouTube channel. Honestly, given how little we know, I wouldn’t be shocked if they were still roommates all these years later. It’s a bit of a loose end, if you ask me.
Who Are Reese’s Other Ex-Wives?

One interesting thing the revival brought up is Reese’s history with marriage – apparently, he’s been married quite a few times! Those of us who watched the original Malcolm in the Middle definitely remember Raduca, his first wife, who Ida brought over from Russia. It turned out she only married him to get a green card and was having an affair with someone she claimed was her brother. It really showed that Reese wasn’t always the one to blame for things going wrong! The revival hasn’t revealed much about his other wives yet, though. Honestly, with Reese’s personality, I can imagine all sorts of crazy characters ending up with him, and it’s a little disappointing that the show doesn’t even give us a hint about who they might be.
How Are Dabney, Kevin, and Lloyd All Fathers to Hubert?

A surprising and humorous twist in the recent Malcolm in the Middle revival is the introduction of Hubert, a teenage son shared by Malcolm’s former Krelboyne classmates, Dabney, Kevin, and Lloyd. The show playfully leaves Hubert’s origins a mystery. While Malcolm briefly wonders how they became fathers, the series never confirms if they’re simply co-parents, a polyamorous family, or if Hubert’s birth involved a surrogate or even cloning. It’s even possible Hubert is adopted, and the three are just having fun with the ambiguity. Some fans speculate Hubert might be a nod to Professor Hubert and his clone, Cubert, from Futurama, but this could simply be a comical reference.
