10 Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Worth Watching

Science fiction films include some of the most important and beloved movies ever created. Films like Ridley Scott’s Alien launched long-running series, and characters from Star Wars are instantly recognizable. While everyone knows the famous sci-fi movies, there are also many excellent, lesser-known films that deserve to be watched.

Lots of good movies in this genre are older and simply get forgotten as time passes. Some don’t get much attention in theaters or when they first appear on streaming platforms, reaching only a small audience. Others struggle to find viewers initially, but can later gain a dedicated fanbase and become cult classics.

These films aren’t talked about much anymore, and each one has a different story behind why. While they weren’t all hits with critics when they first came out, they still offer interesting qualities that make them worth watching today.

We have a number of science fiction horror films that are still impressive today, and some were even ahead of their time, exploring ideas and technology that seem commonplace now.

If you like sci-fi movies with thrills, horror, or intriguing mysteries, here are some excellent films you might not have heard of. While we include a few gems from the 90s, most of these movies came out in the 2000s and beyond.

The current top movie stands out because it’s a recent release from 2020 and a remarkably strong first film for its director, evoking the feel of much older, classic movies.

EXistenZ (1999)

David Cronenberg’s Existenz is a thought-provoking science fiction thriller. Jennifer Jason Leigh plays Allegra, a game designer who has invented ‘eXistenZ,’ a virtual reality game so realistic it fully immerses players in a new world.

The game’s realism is both a strength and a weakness, making players wonder if what they’re experiencing is actually happening or if it’s all part of the game. Allegra meets a shadowy assassin and finds herself on the run with Ted (Jude Law), who isn’t very familiar with virtual reality technology.

With its mind-bending plot, eXistenZ feels surprisingly modern. This visually striking 90s film constantly blurs the line between reality and illusion, leaving you questioning everything you see.

Dark City (1998)

Dark City is a dark and suspenseful science fiction movie featuring Rufus Sewell as John Murdoch. The story begins with him waking up in a hotel bathroom, confused and accused of a murder he doesn’t remember.

Things get even stranger when Murdoch discovers the city isn’t what it seems. Buildings actually change positions while everyone is asleep – and this happens every night at the same time. To top it off, he starts running into odd, unsettling creatures called the Strangers.

I won’t give away any spoilers, but the mystery at the heart of Dark City is connected to a larger, fascinating story. If you like atmospheric science fiction with a touch of intrigue, I highly recommend it.

Equilibrium (2002)

In the film Equilibrium, Christian Bale plays John Preston, a highly trained enforcer who uses a unique martial art called ‘Gun Kata.’ This fighting style allows him to anticipate his opponents’ actions and shoot with incredible accuracy. The story takes place in a bleak future where independent thought is a crime punishable by death.

At the beginning of the film, Preston is shown strictly upholding the rules, but later, certain events make him reconsider where his loyalties lie. While many viewers appreciate the movie’s stylish action, it offers a deeper story than just exciting fights.

Initially, Preston is portrayed as a cold and detached law enforcement officer. Throughout the film, he gradually becomes more relatable and human, a transformation that Christian Bale masterfully portrays in a story that’s much more complex than a typical sci-fi action movie.

Coherence (2013)

Coherence is a suspenseful science fiction mystery featuring a talented cast, including the late Nicholas Brendon. The story begins when a strange comet appears as a group of friends are having dinner, and things quickly become very unusual.

The problems begin when the lights go out, and the guests quickly realize it’s not just the power – their cell phones stop working too. Stepping outside to check things out, they start to wonder if what’s happening is actually real.

While not a horror film, Coherence feels like a psychological thriller, especially as its central mystery develops. The characters are believable and easy to connect with, making it simple to imagine yourself in their situation.

Pitch Black (2000)

Pitch Black is a science fiction horror film taking place on a distant planet with three suns. Although you’d expect constant daylight, a total eclipse is about to cause days of complete darkness. As the suns set, dangerous creatures emerge to hunt.

When a spaceship crashes on an alien planet, the notorious criminal Riddick (Vin Diesel) is among the survivors. With his unique ability to see in the dark, he becomes key to helping the crew stay alive. Though a prisoner himself, the crew reluctantly relies on Riddick’s skills to navigate the dangerous new world.

This film is a strong science fiction survival horror, and it’s how many people first discovered the character Riddick, who’s now starred in several films.

Pandorum (2009)

Pandorum is a thrilling science fiction horror movie with a shocking twist that makes you want to watch it again. The film follows Payton (Dennis Quaid) and Bower (Ben Foster) as they wake up on a spaceship named the Elysium, completely unsure of how they got there.

The Elysium is a huge, unsettling ship, like a complex maze filled with hidden mysteries. Those who survived find themselves facing bizarre creatures within its strange and deceptive environment.

Pandorum earns a recommendation because of its suspenseful and enigmatic story, slowly revealing clues about the true situation. I’m intentionally being unclear to avoid giving away any surprises, but if you enjoy sci-fi horror, you definitely shouldn’t miss this film.

Moon (2009)

The film Moon is a clever and suspenseful science fiction mystery. Sam Rockwell plays Sam Bell, a solitary worker stationed on the moon to mine helium-3. He’s committed to a three-year assignment, completely alone.

Bell isn’t completely isolated; he has a robotic companion named GERTY and a way to send messages to his family, though they arrive with a delay. But as his three years on the station are nearing their end, Sam uncovers a disturbing truth that throws everything into question.

Moon creates a captivating atmosphere and unfolds a compelling, though deliberately paced, story. The main character, Sam, feels very real, making the film a good choice if you’re looking for something thought-provoking rather than a fast-paced action movie.

Sunshine (2007)

Sunshine is a gripping science fiction thriller following a team of astronauts on a dangerous mission to save the Earth. The sun is fading, and the crew, captained by Capa (Cillian Murphy), travels aboard the spacecraft Icarus II with a massive bomb, hoping to restart the sun’s energy.

Okay, so without giving anything away, let me just say getting to the sun isn’t exactly a walk in the park in this film. And things get really interesting when the crew discovers they aren’t the first to try – apparently, a ship called Icarus I attempted this same incredibly dangerous mission before them. It adds a whole layer of mystery and raises the stakes, believe me.

Sunshine is a gripping story about a desperate mission to save humankind. As the journey becomes more perilous, the tight-knit crew begins to feel the strain.

Cube (1997)

Cube is a tense, sci-fi thriller where a group of strangers find themselves trapped inside a massive, interconnected cube-shaped structure. They have no memory of how they arrived and must navigate a labyrinth of narrow passages to survive.

The movie Cube feels like a complex escape room, but predates the trend. The catch is that the challenges inside are life-threatening, and the characters need to rely on each other’s skills to make it out alive.

The movie Cube features several disturbing deaths, but its story feels surprisingly familiar because the characters are ordinary people. The relationships between the survivors are realistic, and become even more compelling as they are eliminated one by one. Released in 1997, this film is widely considered the strongest in the Cube series.

The Vast of Night (2020)

“Vast of Night” is the latest addition to this list and currently the best. It strongly evokes the feel of classic science fiction films from the 1980s and 90s, delivering a captivating and unhurried mystery – a type of storytelling that’s become increasingly rare.

The film takes place in the 1950s. Fay Crocker, a telephone operator played by Sierra McCormick, picks up a peculiar signal. She tells her friend, Everett Sloan, a radio personality played by Jake Horowitz, and he broadcasts the sound hoping someone can explain it.

While The Vast of Night relies more on conversation than action, this actually adds to its incredibly immersive atmosphere. The story is truly captivating as the mystery gradually comes to light. It’s the first film directed by Andrew Patterson, and unfortunately, its limited availability on Amazon Prime means many people may have overlooked it.
