27 Years Later, You’ll Never Look At Darth Maul The Same After Star Wars’ Massive Dark Side Reveal

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 3-4

Darth Maul quickly became a fan favorite when he first appeared in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Over time, and with additions to the Star Wars universe like The Clone Wars, Rebels, and the recent Maul – Shadow Lord, his character has only become more complex and popular.

Recently, Maul – Shadow Lord surprised fans with a quick but impactful reveal. This moment cleverly linked back to Maul’s debut in The Phantom Menace and expanded on the history of the dark side within the Star Wars universe, creating a surprising and meaningful connection that most viewers didn’t anticipate.

This interesting find relates to Darth Maul’s iconic double-bladed lightsaber, but it’s likely not the one most fans would expect. You would have needed to have subtitles enabled during the closing scenes of the third episode of Maul – Shadow Lord to fully understand this reveal.

Maul’s New Lightsaber Screams Are Cool, But The Whispers Are FAR More Important

A new promotion from Lucasfilm revealed that the voice actor for Darth Maul, Sam Witwer, actually provided the screams used in the character’s lightsaber sound effects for Shadow Lord. It’s a really neat detail, and you can hear it during Maul’s fight with Devon Izara and Eeko-Dio Daki in episode 4.

While Sam Witwer’s vocalizations were noticeable, the latest episodes of Shadow Lord actually revealed something even more significant about lightsabers.

This thrilling lightsaber scene happens during Darth Maul’s fight with Devon in the third episode of Shadow Lord. After the Jedi apprentice momentarily uses the Force to shove Maul back, something unexpected happens with his lightsaber.

The subtitles reveal that Maul’s lightsaber seems to communicate with him in a strange language, and we hear the phrase “Korah Rahtahmah.” This same sound has appeared in important scenes featuring Maul throughout the years, most memorably in The Phantom Menace (1999) right before he kills Qui-Gon Jinn. You can hear it in the John Williams composition, “Qui-Gon’s Noble End,” around the 1:50 mark.

For a long time, people thought these faint sounds were just part of the music in “Duel of the Fates,” blended with the other choral pieces. But a new theory, proposed by Shadow Lord, suggests something much more interesting: these eerie whispers weren’t added in post-production. Instead, they believe the whispers were actually coming from Darth Maul’s lightsaber within the story itself.

Has Maul’s Lightsaber Been Speaking The Language Of The Sith Since Phantom Menace?

Both “Qui-Gon’s Noble End” and “Duel of the Fates” feature lyrics inspired by the 14th-century Welsh poem Cad Goddeu (meaning “Battle of the Trees”). Williams translated the poem into Sanskrit to give the music a more ancient, temple-like atmosphere, fitting for the dramatic fight between Darth Maul, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The lyrics sung by the choir don’t actually mean anything. But a recent development in Shadow Lord suggests these mysterious whispers are actually an alien language within the official Star Wars story.

As a huge Star Wars fan, the idea that Darth Maul’s lightsaber has been talking to him all along is seriously cool to think about. If those sounds we hear aren’t just effects, but actually part of the Star Wars universe, it opens up a ton of possibilities. It could even be the ancient Sith language, ur-Kittat, which would be amazing! It’d give us a deeper understanding of how Sith connect with their lightsabers – those corrupted crystals seem to have a life of their own, and this could explain that twisted connection.

According to established Star Wars lore, Sith Lords don’t just use kyber crystals to power their lightsabers – they actively corrupt them by channeling their own pain, rage, and anguish into the crystal. This creates a crystal that’s alive with dark side energy. Now, the new comic Shadow Lord hints at something even more intriguing: a continuous connection between the corrupted crystal and the person wielding it. We saw a possible example of this with Darth Maul, who seemed to learn the name of the crystal’s previous owner after reclaiming his second lightsaber.

Since this information comes from subtitles, it would be great to have Sam Witwer or Dave Filoni confirm it. It really appears to be an interesting idea they developed together regarding Maul and the dark side.

Regardless, it’s really exciting to hear connections back to The Phantom Menace in Maul – Shadow Lord. It’s a great example of why this project is one of the best Star Wars stories Disney has produced.

New episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord release Mondays on Disney+ from Lucasfilm Animation.
