Steve Coogan joins acclaimed BBC sitcom for season 2 guest role – see first look pictures

The BBC has released a sneak peek at season two of Funboys, and announced that Steve Coogan will be making a guest appearance.

This comedy series, debuting on BBC Three in February 2025, centers around the funny experiences of three best friends – Callum (played by Ryan Dylan), Jordan (Rian Lennon), and Lorcan (Lee R James) – who live in a small town in Northern Ireland.

Season 2 will pick up with the trio as they flounder their way into adulthood.

Nick Coogan will play Phillip, an actor who’s stuck in a rut and works at a folk museum. There, he portrays a snobby and mean landowner – a role the BBC describes as being a little too familiar for him, and essentially an outlet for his unpleasant tendencies.

Okay, so I’ve just read the synopsis for the new season, and it sounds like things are really changing up in Ballymacnoose! Last season was pretty heavy – everyone was dealing with loss, some tricky personal stuff, and generally being a bit all over the place. But this time around, it seems like they’ve all come through it and are genuinely growing up. Apparently, Callum’s rocking a perm, Gemma and Lorcan are seriously loved up, and Jordan hasn’t had a major outburst in four months – which is huge for him! It sounds like a much brighter vibe this season, which is good to see.

Things quickly take a turn for the worse when the group stumbles into a complicated situation involving Irish history. Prejudice, personal insecurities, and even robot fighting get mixed in, and unless they watch out, what started as fun could easily end in disaster!

Honestly, I’m completely hooked on this show! I’m dying to know if these characters, despite everything they’ve been through, can actually find some happiness. And then there’s Jordan – is he really losing his hair, or is he just being stubborn about that ‘double crown’ thing? But the biggest question is Lorcan. Will the folks in his small town accept him as he starts to explore new things with love? And more importantly, is he ready for all of that? Seriously, the drama! It’s got me thinking way too much about Lorcan’s… well, you know. It’s a mess, but a glorious mess!

Brian Devlin, Owen Colgan, Paul Bazely, and Richard Croxford are all returning to the cast. Joining Steve Coogan this season are new actors Nicky Harley, Saorlaoith Brady, Lalor Roddy, Donal O’Hanlon, and Amanda Doherty.

Simon Mayhew-Archer, Executive Producer at Mayhay Studios, described Funboys as more than just a TV show, calling it a way of thinking. He expressed gratitude to the BBC for sharing its message with a broad audience.

Lennon described the first season of Funboys as something new and fragile, like a newborn fawn. He then said season two is much more powerful and adventurous, like a young deer confidently running through the woods and boldly facing whatever comes next, letting out a loud yell along the way.

Dylan encouraged viewers to savor the second series of Funboys, suggesting they fully immerse themselves in its humor and enjoy every moment.

Transmission details will be announced at a later date.

Funboys season 1 is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
