Xbox Exclusive RPG Now 100% Free on Microsoft Store

A role-playing game originally released in 1988 is currently available to download for free from the Microsoft Store. While it’s an Xbox exclusive – meaning you can’t play it on any other console – the version available is a remastered edition released in 2020. Though not specifically designed for the Xbox Series X, it can be played on that console thanks to backward compatibility. Xbox Game Studios published the remaster for both Xbox One and PC.

The free game currently being given away with Xbox is a remastered version of the classic 1988 RPG, Wasteland. The original was created by Interplay Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. This updated version was a collaboration between Krome Studios and InXile Entertainment, and published by Xbox Game Studios. It was released as an exclusive title for the Xbox One before Xbox began releasing games on other platforms. We don’t yet know why the game is free or how long it will remain available.

1988 Classic RPG

The first Wasteland game launched a long-running series that continues today. These are challenging role-playing games set in a post-apocalyptic America, many years after a nuclear war devastated the country and turned it into a barren wasteland. The original game was a hit with both critics and players, but a sequel didn’t happen right away. That changed when Brian Fargo, the game’s original director, created inXile Entertainment in the 2000s. This led to the release of Wasteland 2 in 2014 and Wasteland 3 in 2020. As of now, there haven’t been any announcements about a fourth game.

Though some Xbox players might not be familiar with the Wasteland series, they definitely know the game it greatly influenced. In fact, Fallout borrowed heavily from Wasteland.

Okay, so the really classic, original version isn’t available for free, but the one they remastered in 2020 is! And it’s amazing. They completely redid the graphics and sound, and brought it up to full 3D. Plus, they added voice acting, some new character portraits, and a bunch of other cool, modern improvements. It really breathes new life into a game I already loved!

The updated version of the game didn’t score as well with critics or players – it has a 64 on Metacritic, 2.5 stars on the Microsoft Store, and a 69% approval rating. However, it’s currently available for free, down from its usual price of $14.99. If you download it, you’ll get a classic RPG that can take anywhere from 15 to 40 hours to complete.
