Scrubs Finally Brings Back the Best Missing Character & Reveals Their Replacement for Season 2

The final episode of the Scrubs revival delivers a welcome return for a beloved character. The new season successfully captured the spirit of the original show (avoiding the pitfalls of Season 9!), bringing back Zach Braff as J.D., Donald Faison as Turk, and Sarah Chalke as Elliot. While Julia Reyes’ Carla and John C. McGinley’s Dr. Cox haven’t appeared as often as fans would like due to scheduling issues, they’ve still been memorable. Be warned: major spoilers follow!

The season finale successfully wraps up Scrubs Season 10 (also known as Season 1) with a heartwarming reunion at Sacred Heart Hospital. It features all the familiar faces, plus the welcome return of Christa Miller as Jordan and, even better, Neil Flynn as the Janitor. He was a hilarious and memorable character alongside Cox, and a constant source of playful trouble for J.D. in the original series, making his reappearance a real treat.

What Happened To The Janitor After Scrubs & What The Revival Sets Up

When the Janitor reappears, it’s revealed he and J.D. haven’t seen each other in 17 years, which makes sense considering his brief appearance in the first episode of season nine back in 2009. More significantly, we learn he’s climbed the career ladder and is now Chief Custodian for the Joint Commission—a title that likely won’t be as memorable as just ‘the Janitor.’ This new position gives him the power to inspect hospitals, meaning he can potentially cause J.D. even more trouble than he used to.

The Scrubs finale had one last twist: the seemingly friendly Maintenance Guy is actually the Janitor’s son. Though it might be a trick to confuse J.D.! This sets up the Maintenance Guy to become a new troublemaker, upset at being seen as someone who only got the job because of his father. This could bring back a key dynamic that was missing from the revival series.

While the Janitor’s absence will be felt, there’s a good chance we’ll see Neil Flynn reprise his role if the show gets renewed – and with its strong ratings, a renewal seems probable. Showrunner Aseem Batra told Deadline they’re eager to bring Flynn back. Hopefully, they can make it happen, and we might even see him team up with his on-screen son for some fun interactions with J.D. if Scrubs ever returns.

All episodes of the Scrubs revival are available to stream on Hulu.
