White Sox Anthem Singer Gerald Chaney Collapses on Field Mid-Song

A member of the White Sox family is on the road to recovery after a major health scare.

Gerald Chaney, a singer who has performed the national anthem for the Chicago White Sox and other teams for more than 20 years, collapsed while singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before the April 15th game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Gerald Chaney, who has performed the anthem at White Sox games for many years, had a medical issue while singing before Monday night’s game, the team announced on X (formerly Twitter). Paramedics treated him at the stadium, and he was conscious before being taken to the hospital for more tests and care.

After the incident, White Sox manager Will Venable shared that the singer is recovering and doing okay, but also told ABC 7 Chicago it was a frightening experience.

Venable praised everyone’s quick and helpful response, emphasizing that making sure the person was okay was the priority. He was very relieved to hear they are doing well, which he said was the most important outcome.

A late arrival by Chaney pushed back the game’s start time by 12 minutes. The Red Sox eventually lost to the Rays with a final score of 3-8.

The team shared their well wishes for Gerald and his family, hoping he has a quick and complete recovery.

The singer, known for performing the national anthem and who also teaches school near Chicago, said in a 2011 interview with the Chicago Tribune that he typically performs at about 12 baseball games each season.

Besides performing for the Chicago White Sox, he’s also sung the national anthem or performed at games for several other teams, including the Chicago Bears, Bulls, and Cubs, as well as the Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks, and New York Mets.

Overall, Chaney considers his role a “storyteller.”

Chaney explained to the newspaper that he was simply sharing a story. He wasn’t trying to excite the audience, but rather to remind them about overcoming hardship and achieving success despite difficult times.

She suddenly began having stroke-like symptoms, initially unable to respond when Justin asked if she was alright. She then found she couldn’t speak and the right side of her face started to droop.

Although her symptoms briefly subsided, Hailey went to the hospital where scans revealed she’d had a small blood clot in her brain, which doctors identified as a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack).

Further testing at UCLA uncovered a hole in her heart, known as a patent foramen ovale (PFO). Doctors determined the blood clot had traveled to her heart, passed through the hole, and reached her brain, causing the TIA.

Hailey has since undergone a successful procedure to close the PFO and is now recovering well.

The same year Hailey faced a health issue, Justin also experienced one. In June 2022, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which caused temporary paralysis on one side of his face. This forced him to cancel the remaining dates of his Justice World Tour.

In a video posted to Instagram, Justin explained the condition affected the nerves in his ear and face, preventing him from blinking, smiling, or moving his nostril on the affected side. He also shared that it had become increasingly difficult to eat.

Emilia Clarke, known for her role in Game of Thrones, revealed a harrowing health battle in a 2019 essay for The New Yorker. While filming the show, she experienced a sudden and severe headache while at the gym, which quickly escalated. She described feeling violently ill and realizing something was seriously wrong with her brain.

After being rushed to the hospital, doctors diagnosed her with a subarachnoid hemorrhage – a life-threatening stroke caused by bleeding in the space around the brain. She had suffered an aneurysm, a rupture in an artery. Emergency surgery was performed to repair it, but the pain was excruciating.

During her recovery, Emilia experienced aphasia, struggling to communicate and often muttering incoherently. Thankfully, the aphasia subsided after a week, and she was discharged from the hospital a month later. However, a 2013 brain scan revealed the aneurysm had doubled in size, requiring a second surgery.

This second procedure initially failed, leading to a massive bleed and putting her life at risk. Doctors had to perform a more invasive surgery, accessing her brain directly through her skull. Despite these terrifying experiences, Emilia is now thankfully fully recovered and says she’s “at a hundred per cent.”
