Following the recent release of Starfield on PlayStation 5, rumors are circulating that Bethesda may also be planning a version for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Universo Nintendo reported spotting a rating for the sci-fi role-playing game on Taiwan’s entertainment software rating website. The game received an R rating earlier this week due to its depictions of violence, drug use, and strong language, but that rating appears to have been removed as of today.
Although neither Bethesda nor Microsoft has officially confirmed it, a rating for a Switch 2 version of the game suggests development is nearly finished, or already complete. This strongly implies the game will be released on the new console, it’s just a question of timing.
Bethesda’s release of Starfield on PS5 hasn’t been without problems. Numerous players have reported frequent crashes while playing the game on Reddit, and these issues seem to affect both the standard PS5 and the more powerful PS5 Pro, suggesting the problem isn’t related to console performance. Bethesda has acknowledged these crashes and says they are working on a fix.
PlayStation is working to fix some recent reports of PS5 crashes. They’ve identified the cause in a few specific areas and are planning to release a quick update this week to address the problem. They thanked players for bringing it to their attention and promised to share further updates.
However, many players haven’t experienced any problems with Starfield. Our review also considered the game a strong port, awarding it 9 out of 10 stars, though we felt the Free Lanes update could have been more substantial.
Todd Howard, the director of Starfield, recently addressed the mixed reactions the game has received at launch. He pointed out that Bethesda’s other popular franchises, The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, also faced similar criticism when they first came out, but eventually gained a dedicated fanbase.
Todd Howard noted that the early days of both the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series shared some similarities. He also pointed out that fans really enjoyed that initial approach. However, he believes Fallout 76 and Starfield represent a clear departure in creative direction from their previous games.
We were eager to explore new avenues. After working in this field for two decades, I’m keen to experiment with different approaches, gain new insights, and bring some fresh ideas to life.
Howard talked about Bethesda’s unusual approach to New Game+ in Starfield, describing it as a method for posing a thought-provoking question to players.
Howard explained that the Unity mechanic was their attempt at a New Game+ feature, but with a philosophical twist. It was meant to challenge players to consider what motivates them – simply collecting everything, or being willing to let go and start fresh. The game asked players to reflect on their own life choices: would they abandon everything they’ve built, including relationships like the one with Sarah Morgan, and begin anew? The difficulty of losing possessions and connections was intentional, designed to evoke those feelings of loss and the weight of making such a decision.
Starfield is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
