A beloved game originally released on the PlayStation 1 in 1996 is now available for free, thanks to a remastered version. While it first came out in the US in 1998, it was exclusive to the PS1 for many years. This remaster has expanded its reach to modern consoles like PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One & Series X, and even mobile devices. Currently, you can download it for free on mobile, making it accessible to almost everyone. However, keep in mind that this free version isn’t the highest-quality version of the remastered game.
From now until April 23rd, gamers can get a free copy of Broken Sword: Shadows of the Templars: Reforged on iOS and Android devices through the Epic Games Store mobile app. All you need is a free Epic Games Store account, and once you claim the game, it’s yours to play forever – as long as the Epic Games Store and your account remain active.
A 1996 Classic
For those unfamiliar, the game is based on Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars, the first installment in the series, which originally launched in 1996. Developed by Revolution Software and published by Virgin Interactive, it received a score of 81 on GameRankings and was a commercial success. This led to five Broken Sword games released up to 2014, and the series is now making a comeback with the upcoming sixth title, Broken Sword: Parzival’s Stone.
As a huge fan, I was so excited when the original creators, Revolution Software, released a remastered version in 2024 called Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars – Reforged. And it was amazing – critics actually loved it more than the original, giving it an 89 on Metacritic! It’s the same classic gameplay and story I remember, but everything looks incredible with updated 4K graphics and completely new audio. It really breathes new life into a game I already adored.
If you’re trying out the free remaster of this classic PlayStation 1 game, you can expect it to take around 10 to 11 hours to finish. The exact time will depend on how quickly you solve the puzzles and navigate the traditional point-and-click gameplay.
