Gundam: “Ancient” Mech Statue in Real-Life’s Origins Reveald

The long-running anime series Mobile Suit Gundam is one of the earliest and most iconic mech franchises, beginning in the 1970s and continuing to release new shows and films. With the upcoming release of Hathaway’s Flash: The Sorcery of Nymph Circle in American cinemas, a Gundam mech has appeared in an unexpected location. While Japan has featured several life-sized Gundam statues for years, a village in Indonesia now has one of its own, sparking curiosity about its origins. The story behind this new statue has now been uncovered.

I still can’t believe the story of this incredible statue! Back in 2019, photos started circulating of what looked like an ancient mech, seriously resembling something straight out of the Gundam universe. For years, everyone – anime fans and history buffs alike – argued about whether it was a real archaeological find or an elaborate hoax. Well, the mystery’s been solved, and it’s even wilder than I imagined! It turns out the statue was built by a Gundam enthusiast named Yatman. He painstakingly crafted it to look like the Gundam Exia from Mobile Suit Gundam 00, and he actually fooled a lot of people into thinking it was an ancient artifact! He said he built it as a personal landmark, working on it every night after work. It’s amazing to see the creator standing next to his incredible creation – it really puts the whole story into perspective!


Gundam Statues in Japan

If you can’t make it to Indonesia to see the stone statue, you can still experience real-life mechs in Japan. Two full-size Gundam statues – the RX-0 Unicorn and the RX-93ff v Gundam – are permanently displayed in Tokyo and Fukuoka. However, the impressive walking Gundam in Yokohama stopped operating in 2024. Although it couldn’t fly, this Gundam was unique as it was the first mech capable of walking on its own.

Currently, the United States doesn’t have its own life-sized Gundam statue. However, with anime becoming increasingly popular in the West – as seen with the recent One Piece/Popeyes collaboration – it’s possible we could see one here in the future. As more Gundam series make their way from Japan to America, the possibility becomes more likely. Even if a statue doesn’t happen, the Gundam franchise is continuing to grow and create new anime content.
