The Caribou Trail launches May 14

I’m really excited – Unreliable Narrators just announced that their WWI first-person adventure, The Caribou Trail, is coming to PlayStation 5 and PC on May 14th! You’ll be able to grab it on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Here is an overview of the game, via Unreliable Narrators:

About

Gallipoli, 1915.

Fisher leaves his peaceful hometown in Newfoundland to fight with Britain in the war, joining his friends with the expectation of a quick and exciting experience they can share when they return.

They won’t find honor waiting for them, only hardship, defeat, and a little bit of insanity. It’s the small, unseen acts of camaraderie that keep a unit functioning, the agonizing decisions they have to make, the struggle to stay alive… and truly awful food that nobody back home would ever consider eating.

A Gripping Story Inspired by Real Events

The Caribou Trail is an immersive story, told from a personal perspective, about a group of friends who undertake extraordinary missions during World War I.

Based on true stories, The Caribou Trail combines historical events with fictional storytelling to depict the often-overlooked Gallipoli campaign of World War I, from its beginning to the soldiers’ final departure.

Experience the war firsthand: sneak through enemy barbed wire on a risky scouting mission, eliminate a dangerous sniper, and navigate the confusion of an urgent evacuation. You’ll see everything as if it’s happening to you.

For me, this isn’t about winning the war, it’s about what it takes to live through it. It’s about experiencing everything that happens away from the front lines – the constant waiting, the struggle through the muddy trenches, and the quiet moments remembering those we’ve lost, collecting their dog tags as a way to honor them. It’s about connecting with the people still fighting, sharing what little strength we have left, and swapping stories – even the ones that might just be legends. Mostly, it’s about finding a little comfort and warmth around the campfire, sharing those haunting tales and feeling a sense of community.

Eventually, you’ll face a critical decision – to act, or to hold back. Every action you take will bind you more tightly to the people fighting alongside you, and potentially lead to their defeat.

Forget points or numbers. This is about surviving, the quick bonds you form with others, and simply hoping to return home.

Friendship Forged in Dirt

War may take everything, but it also builds bonds.

You’re not soldiers, but everyday people – fishermen, those lost in thought, and those who share tales. You spend your time cooking simple meals, enjoying a good laugh, and finding comfort in each other’s company during quiet moments.

Amidst the turmoil, simple routines offer comfort and help us remember our identities and allies. What starts as a desperate attempt to endure transforms into a strong bond of camaraderie, a connection that remains vivid even after the conflict ends.

  • Gordon – Insufferable and lovable. Always the center of attention. He’ll crack a joke or roast you at the worst moment possible, but he’ll be there for you no matter what.
  • Lonnie – A whimsical, dreamy kid that doesn’t belong, but still strives to do his best. What he lacks in military prowess, he compensates with his warmth and spirit. He’ll even share a good spooky story or two to change the mood…
  • Fisher – You are the middle brother, constantly defusing (or participating in) Gordo and Lon’s bickering. In the face of the war’s horrors, you define Fisher’s willingness to see things as they are, or instead delve into superstitious escapism.

These are the faces you will remember long after Gallipoli.

Folklore and Ghost Stories

When night falls, the line between reality and imagination blurs.

In the dark trenches, soldiers questioned whether the moving shadows were merely illusions created by the fire, or something more – the spirits of those who had fallen. The novel The Caribou Trail blends traditional folklore with psychological horror, reflecting the ways soldiers tried to understand a chaotic and senseless war.

What you find may not change history, but it might change you.
