A Different World Cast Reunites to Welcome a New Class at Hillman

Class is back in session at Hillman College.

The new A Different World spinoff on Netflix will follow a new generation of students at the show’s historically Black college, but it also aims to capture the spirit of the original series with a touch of familiar feeling.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to see so much of the original creative team back for the sequel! Having the legendary Debbie Allen producing and directing is amazing, and it’s wonderful they’ve brought back so many of the original writers. Plus, seeing fan favorites like Kadeem Hardison, Jamine Guy, and Cree Summer reprise their roles? It’s a recipe for nostalgia and a fantastic continuation of the series!

Returning to Hillman College as Kimberly Reese Boyer isn’t just a nostalgic trip for Charnele Brown; it’s a chance to keep the spirit of the show alive.

“We need this immediately,” she said in a private conversation with MS NOW. “Our children need to return to focusing on what matters most – whether that’s continuing their education or learning a skilled trade.”

Since appearing on the show, Charnele Brown has continued to inspire and support others. She successfully combines her acting work with writing and teaching at her acting school, Charnele Brown’s Acting Academy.

She and her former A Different World colleagues—like Jenifer Lewis, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Darryl M. Bell, who are also returning—are excited to see the world of the popular sitcom continue in a new series.

It’s wonderful to see this new group of performers,” she said. “Watching them work brings back so many memories of the fun, energy, and friendship we all shared back in the eighties and nineties. Seeing them is like looking back at ourselves forty years ago!”

The new actors and actresses understand the importance of continuing the tradition of A Different World and are committed to honoring its history.

Harrison told MS NOW that he first saw the show ten years ago. Seeing such talented young Black actors and artists inspired him and made him believe he could pursue a similar path one day.

The founder of Black Girls Do Theater explained, “We’re finally making this happen—building on the past and working with the people who inspired my journey as an artist.”

Honestly, meeting the original cast – people like Brown, who I’ve admired for so long – has been a dream come true. They’ve been unbelievably kind and supportive, and it means the world knowing they believe in us and are cheering us on!

Still, it was full of starstruck moments, as she added,“ We met Dawnn Lewis and my heart melted.”

Because the truth is, Hillman was never just a campus—it was a reflection of possibility.

The newest cast members of Hillman include Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah, the daughter of Whitley and Dwayne. She’ll be joined by Alijah Kai Haggins, Cornell Young, Kennedi Reece, Jordan Aaron Hall, and Chibuikem Uche. Rounding out the cast are Vincent Jamal, Elijah J. Roberts, Renée Harrison, Famecia Ward, and Dasan Frazier.

Oh my gosh, meeting the original cast was EVERYTHING! Seriously, Brown and all of them were just…amazing. They were so incredibly kind and supportive, and you could just feel they were genuinely excited for us and wanted us to succeed. It meant the world to me, honestly. They’ve been so thoughtful and generous, and knowing they’re rooting for us…it’s just incredible!

Originally airing from 1987 to 1993 as a continuation of The Cosby Show, the series quickly became a classic. Starring Lisa Bonet as Denise Huxtable, it resonated with audiences and is remembered for its realistic and enduring depiction of young Black life and its well-developed characters.

Oh my gosh, Whitley and Dwayne! They completely stole the show, honestly. Out of all the characters across all six seasons, they were my absolute favorites. It wasn’t just about their romance – though, let’s be real, it was amazing – it was how they both grew as people, their drive to achieve their goals, and how wonderfully unique they each were. They just felt so real and I was totally invested in their journey!

A Different World realistically portrayed college life while highlighting the importance of friendships, community, and growing as a person, both for the characters and the viewers. Brown believes the upcoming sequel will have the same impact on a new generation.

She really praised the children, saying they were incredible both while filming and in general. She described them as total professionals with tons of energy and kindness, and expressed complete confidence that they would exceed her already high expectations.
