This autumn marks a double debut on the London stage: Christine Baranski, known for her role in Mamma Mia!, will be appearing in the West End for the very first time, and Richard E. Grant is returning after a 20-year absence.
The two actors will be performing in a short-term production of Noël Coward’s play, Hay Fever, which is also called A Comedy of Bad Manners.
The actors will star as Judith and David Bliss, a retired actress and novelist who spend their later years hosting a series of unwelcome guests at their home.
Judith isn’t enjoying retirement. After a career as a performer, she misses the excitement of being on stage and receiving applause. Now, at their country home, her husband David, a private novelist, and their directionless children, Sorrel and Simon, are too caught up in their own lives to give her the attention she craves.
Judith decides to host a young fan for the weekend, but what she doesn’t know is that each member of her family, the Blisses, is also bringing a guest. Since the Blisses aren’t known for being hospitable or flexible, their home quickly descends into a whirlwind of awkward games, snide remarks, and unwanted performances.

Although Christine Baranski is a well-known and award-winning actress on stage and screen – having won two Tony Awards – she’s surprisingly never performed in London’s West End. She expressed her excitement about finally making her West End debut at Wyndham’s Theatre in a Noël Coward play, calling it a dream come true, as she first saw a West End show while studying at Juilliard in 1971. She’s also looking forward to spending time in London, a city she loves. Interestingly, it’s been 20 years since both she and her co-star, Richard E. Grant, last performed on the West End stage!
Richard is incredibly talented – quick-witted and hilarious. I’m excited to work with him and our fantastic director, Emily Burns, on this play. Hay Fever is a century-old comedy known for its outrageous behavior. It demands fast-paced, stylish performances, and we hope audiences will thoroughly enjoy spending time with this eccentric and free-spirited family!”
Grant shared that he previously appeared in ‘The Play What I Wrote’ at Wyndham’s Theatre 25 years ago and is excited to be back on that same stage, hopefully with a larger dressing room this time! He’s thrilled to be performing in Noël Coward’s comedy ‘Hay Fever’ – which first debuted in London’s West End 101 years ago – alongside Christine Baranski, and is delighted to be directed by Emily Burns. He expressed his love for the theatre and his joy at returning to it.
The play will be performed at Wyndham’s Theatre for a short time only, from September 22nd to December 12th, and tickets are available to purchase starting today.
