Who is The Wizard of the Kremlin ?
The film The Wizard of the Kremlin is based on Guiliano da Empoli’s satirical novel. It centers around Vadim Baranov, portrayed by Paul Dano, who acts as a spin doctor for Putin. The story begins with a meeting between Baranov and American scholar Rowland (Jeffrey Wright) and unfolds through flashbacks and narration, starting in the 1990s.
We’re introduced to Baranov as a theatre director, but he quickly becomes the key strategist behind Vladimir Putin (played with chilling precision by Jude Law), the head of the FSB. Putin gradually takes control from the weakening and alcoholic President Boris Yeltsin. However, it’s Putin who the wealthy Russian oligarchs see as someone they can control, with Baranov subtly pulling the strings from behind the scenes, enjoying the true power.
The Wizard of the Putin rise to power
As Putin, often called the Tzar, gained power, he handled any challenges with a cold and uncompromising approach, similar to Stalin. A figure named Baranov is portrayed as manipulating Putin from behind the scenes, influencing events like the Kursk submarine disaster, the annexation of Crimea, and his growing hostility towards Ukraine. The film uses actual news footage to create a documentary-style feel.
Wizard acting?
The film truly shines because of Paul Dano and Jude Law’s acting. Law is surprisingly excellent as Putin, though Dano’s portrayal is more subdued – cool, cynical, and delivered with a fairly monotone voice. While this suits the character, it may be why Quentin Tarantino criticized him as being bland. This performance could potentially distance some viewers. Additionally, Alicia Vikander’s role as a romantic interest feels unnecessary, as the script doesn’t give her much to work with.
At nearly two and a half hours long, The Wizard of the Kremlin is a bit lengthy, but like all great political thrillers, its intricate political maneuvering is completely captivating.
