Ubisoft recently shared a video highlighting the history of the Assassin’s Creed series. It starts with the original game from 2007 and shows how the combat has changed and improved with each new release.
The video showcases the original combat system, built around timing counters, and how it improved over time in Assassin’s Creed 2, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, and Assassin’s Creed Revelations. A significant change arrived with Assassin’s Creed 3 in 2012, giving the main character, Connor, a wider range of weapons, including a bow. Then, in 2013’s Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, guns were added to Edward’s fighting options, further evolving the gameplay.
The combat system remained similar in 2014’s Assassin’s Creed Rogue, but Assassin’s Creed Unity introduced a slower, more challenging style of fighting. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, released in 2015, built on this system and heavily featured close-quarters brawling, utilizing the skills of its two main characters, Jacob and Evie Frye.
After a short pause following Syndicate, the Assassin’s Creed series underwent a major change with the release of Assassin’s Creed Origins in 2017. This game added more complex RPG elements, giving weapons and armor unique stats and abilities that players could use as Bayek pursued the Order of the Ancients. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey in 2018 built upon this system, introducing even more weapon variety and deeper RPG features. The most recent game to utilize this system, so far, is 2020’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which added a posture system for enemies.
In 2023, the Assassin’s Creed series revisited its classic combat style with Assassin’s Creed Mirage, putting players in the role of Basim as he battles enemies in Baghdad. More recently, Assassin’s Creed Shadows expanded on the combat system, offering two different ways to play with its two main characters: Yasuke, who favors action, and Naoe, who specializes in stealth.
Although Ubisoft hasn’t recently revealed any big news about the Assassin’s Creed series, rumors suggest a remake of Black Flag is coming, potentially called Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. The game’s focus on “synchronization” hints at a possible connection to an upcoming announcement. Ubisoft did confirm last month that a Black Flag remake was in development.
Since its release last year, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has received ongoing updates. The latest update adds support for PSSR 2 on the PlayStation 5 Pro and allows players to use mouse and keyboard controls on the Nintendo Switch 2.
