Kourtney Kardashian Playfully Calls Out Kris Jenner Over Name Change

Kourtney Kardashian Barkeris calling it like she quite literally sees it.

Just before her 46th birthday, Kourtney Kardashian shared that her mom, Kris Jenner, had already sent her a birthday note. However, Kourtney jokingly noticed something a little odd about the stationery it was written on.

Kourtney shared a photo on her Instagram Story on April 15th showing letterhead with Kris’s name on it. The letterhead said “Kris Kardashian Jenner” in fancy purple writing.

Above the snapshot, Kourtney wrote, “I love my mommy,” before quipping, “New middle name?”

It would be interesting if Kris Jenner, now 70, added Kardashian back as her middle name. She and her late ex-husband, Robert Kardashian Sr., divorced in 1991, and she stopped using Kardashian as her last name soon after. Later that year, she married Caitlyn Jenner and took Jenner as her new surname.

After her divorce in 2015, Kris Jenner considered going back to using her maiden name, Kardashian. She revealed on an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians in 2016 that she frequently makes restaurant reservations using the name Kris Kardashian.

After Khloe reminded Kris that Kardashian wasn’t her current last name, Kris jokingly said she would change it back.

Khloe was puzzled and asked, “Why? It’s been over 24 years!” This prompted Kris to give a now-famous response to her daughter.

“I was that before you were that,” she quipped. “I was the original Kardashian.”

Changing names isn’t unusual for the Kardashian family. Kourtney, for example, added her husband Travis Barker’s last name to her own after their wedding in May 2022.

Kourtney Kardashian, who has three children – Mason (16), Penelope (13), and Reign (11) – with her ex, Scott Disick, and also helps raise her stepchildren Atiana (27), Landon (22), and Alabama (20), previously made a joke about changing her last name. She also shares a young son, Rocky (2), with Travis Barker.

Kylie gave Kourtney a pair of light blue jeans from her Khy by Kylie Jenner line, personalized with Kourtney’s initials, but Kourtney pointed out one problem with them.

Kourtney commented on an Instagram post in April 2024, saying the item was cute but asked if she could get one with the initials ‘KB’ instead.

The Kardashians and Jenners aren’t the only celebrities who’ve changed their names. Here are some other stars and the names they now prefer…

Congratulations to Post Malone! He actually chose to include his family name as part of his stage name. But despite his fame, he prefers his close friends to call him by his given name.

At the 2024 MTV VMAs, Taylor Swift called Post Malone “Austin” when they accepted the award for Best Collaboration for their song “Fortnight.”

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, known as Lilly on Modern Family, now goes by Frances Anderson. She made the name change to reflect her new career as a musician.

In a 2025 interview with TopMob News, Aubrey explained that ‘Frances’ is actually her middle name, given in honor of a longtime friend of her mother. She also admitted she preferred it because it was shorter than her full, hyphenated last name, ‘Aubrey Anderson-Emmons’.

Dakota and Elle Fanning, the sisters, both decided to use their middle names when they started their careers in Hollywood.

You know, Elle told me the reason her sisters and she all use their middle names is because their mom always did! It just felt natural for them to follow suit.

She remembered feeling embarrassed during roll call at school. She told Glamour magazine in 2016 that when they called ‘Mary?’, other students would say there was no one by that name. She’d then have to sheepishly raise her hand and say, ‘It’s me.’

The Summer House star shocked Bravo fans by revealing his legally given first name isn’t actually Carl.

“My driver’s license and passport both say William,” explained Carl, a veteran of nine seasons on the reality show, in an August 2025 interview with PopViewers. “But I’ve always gone by Carl, ever since the beginning.”

Sterling K. Brown went by his middle name Kelby until he was a teenager.

During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show in April 2025, he explained that his father is Sterling Brown Jr. and his grandfather is Sterling Brown Sr. He decided he wanted a name of his own because ‘Sterling’ felt like a name for an older man.

Years after his father passed away from a heart attack, the actor—known for his role in This Is Us—chose to go back to using his original first name as a tribute to him.

He explained that after his father died when he was ten, he hadn’t heard anyone say his father’s name in over five years. By the time he was sixteen, he just wanted to hear it again, so he started asking people to call him by his father’s name, Sterling.

The winner of Traitors revealed on TopMob’s Hot Goss that his full name is Nicholas Dylan Harrison Efron, but he goes by Dylan. He explained that because Nicholas is his first name, everything else shifts down – making Harrison his middle name now.

Andrew, Matthew, and Joey Lawrence all decided to change their last names professionally. Joey, whose middle name is Lawrence, was the first to make the switch, after a talent agent pointed out the family’s surname wasn’t ideal.

Kat Dennings began using a professional name when she was nine years old, long before she appeared on an episode of Sex and the City in 2000 and started her acting career.

Kat Dennings, known for her role on 2 Broke Girls, explained to Kylie Kelce on her podcast, Not Gonna Lie With Kylie Kelce, that she prefers not to have her full, legal name publicly shown, like on a poster.

As a creative person, I’m always fascinated by how people choose their stage names! In my experience, it’s often a blend of admiration and personal connection. This actress, for example, found inspiration in two surprising places. She loved Christina Ricci’s character, Kat, from the movie Casper, and that sparked an idea. Then, she also looked to a family friend – her mother’s best friend, actually! – through the surname of Janine Denni, who was the wife of Lloyd Alexander, the author of The Black Cauldron. It’s lovely how she combined these meaningful references to create something uniquely her own.

For over thirty years, Cher thought her full legal name was Cherilyn. However, when she requested her birth certificate in the late 1970s to legally change her name to simply Cher, she found out she was originally registered as Cheryl.

In her 2024 memoir, Cher: The Memoir, Part One, the singer Cher wrote about how her mother, Georgia Holt, reacted when she found out.

When she told her mother, who had her at 19, about the situation, her mother exclaimed, “Let me see!” Then, remembering her own experience after giving birth, she said, “I was just a teenager myself, and it was really painful. Cut me some slack.”

Let me tell you a fun story! You might know me as Shaboozey, but that wasn’t always my name! It actually started as a funny little mistake back in high school. When they were listing my name for something, the folks at my Virginia high school misspelled my last name, and ‘Shaboozey’ stuck! I liked it so much, I started using it as my stage name, and well, the rest is history! It just felt right, and now it’s how everyone knows me.

The singer first released music under her real name in 2001, but she thought the name Katy Perry—taken from her mother’s family name—would be more appealing to pop music listeners.

Cardi B got the nickname ‘Bacardi’ because her sister was playfully called ‘Hennessy’ by those close to them. She eventually shortened it to the name we know today, which she felt better represented her.

Before she became the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle was briefly known as Rachel.

Shania Twain revealed the story behind her stage name during a recent interview on Apple Music’s Home Now Radio. Born Eilleen Regina Edwards, she was later adopted and became Eilleen Regina Twain. When she started her singing career, she decided she needed a stage name that didn’t sound so much like her grandmothers – she’s named after both Eilleen and Regina! She didn’t want to perform under a name so closely tied to her family, so she chose ‘Shania Twain.’ She had met someone named Shania and loved the sound of it, and that’s how her stage name was born.

Chappell Roan, the singer behind ‘Good Luck, Babe!’, has always approached performing as a distinct artistic persona – a ‘drag project’ – which helps her maintain clear boundaries between her stage life and her personal life, and protect herself within the music industry.

Interestingly, Gigi Hadid didn’t choose her stage name – it came about in school! Her teacher kept mixing her up with a classmate named Helena. Because her mom always called her “Gigi” as a nickname, she asked the teacher to just refer to her as Gigi, and the name ended up sticking.

If you’re looking for an explosive action-star name, how about Vin Diesel instead?

Miley Cyrus got her nickname, Smiley, because she was always so cheerful. Over time, people started calling her Miley instead, and that’s the name everyone uses now.

The singer resembled a Bruno more than a Peter, so his father began calling him Bruno, and that’s the name he’s been known as ever since – Bruno Mars.

Before the meat dresses and chart-topping music, Lady Gaga was just an everyday girl from New York.

Jason Sudeikis revealed on the Today show that his father named him Daniel. However, to avoid confusion with another family member, his mother began calling him by his middle name, Jason.

Emma Stone chose to use a stage name because her real name was already taken by another actor registered with the Screen Actors Guild.

Interestingly, Reese Witherspoon’s first name isn’t actually her middle name! She adopted ‘Reese’ as a first name to pay tribute to her mother, whose family name is Reese.

Every artist has a different side to their public image, and for Lana Del Rey, that persona is the one she presents to the world.

In 2014, Frank Ocean legally changed his name because, why not?

Many fans don’t realize that Tina Fey, the creator of 30 Rock, was actually born Elizabeth. She playfully honored her given name by naming her iconic character on the show, Liz Lemon.

This pioneer of West Coast rap would later go on to be known as Snoop Dogg.

Okay, so I just found out the real reason she calls herself Lorde! Apparently, our girl is totally fascinated with nobility and history. It’s not just a cool stage name, it’s like, a deep dive into her interests! She took ‘Lord’ and just feminized it with an ‘e’ – it’s so clever and perfectly her, honestly. I knew there had to be a story behind it, and it’s even cooler than I imagined!

Before becoming a world-famous singer, Ricky Martin was known by a different, more common name.

It’s hard to believe that Iggy Azalea was born Amethyst Kelly!
