A new TV series based on the world of Harry Potter is coming to HBO, and it’s generating a lot of discussion. While many fans are thrilled about a fresh take on the beloved books, others feel it’s too early for a complete reimagining of the popular films. The project is also facing significant controversy due to J.K. Rowling’s public and often divisive views on important social issues, including transgender rights.
Even with potential challenges, the upcoming Harry Potter TV series is still one of the most talked-about shows of 2026. The franchise is known for its magical atmosphere and wizarding schools, but while the stories can be intense, Harry Potter probably won’t ever be as scary or unsettling as some other shows about witches. Here are five witchy series that are significantly darker and more disturbing than Harry Potter is likely to be.
Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches Shares a Universe With Another Popular Horror Series
Mayfair Witches is a horror drama series based on Anne Rice’s Lives of the Mayfair Witches novels. It’s the second television series adapted from Rice’s work, following Interview with the Vampire.
The series Mayfair Witches centers on Dr. Rowan Fielding, a neurosurgeon who discovers she’s connected to a family of witches. Rowan starts to realize something is different when she develops a dangerous ability: when she gets angry, she can unintentionally kill people with her mind.
Rowan’s quest for answers leads her to New Orleans, the original home of her family’s powerful line of witches. There, she discovers a dangerous spirit named Lasher has haunted and tormented them for centuries. As Rowan investigates her family history, she uncovers more than she expected, finding herself entangled in an ancient prophecy and the weight of her family’s legacy.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Put a Dark Spin on a Classic ’90s Sitcom
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was a spooky horror series that quickly gained popularity over its four seasons. It was a new take on the classic Sabrina the Teenage Witch story – but much darker and more modern than the cheerful ’90s sitcom most people remember. When it first came out, viewers weren’t sure what to expect.
This horror series is a far cry from the lighthearted tone of the original, but it brilliantly recreates the dark and unsettling mood of the source comic. The result is a gripping and realistic coming-of-age story centered around a witch who is half-human.
As a total cinema lover, I’m really drawn to stories about Sabrina. She’s in this incredible position – she longs for a normal life, to just hang out with her friends and be human, but she’s also afraid of losing the things that make her unique. And the stakes are so high! She’s constantly battling really dangerous forces, and it’s not just her family at risk, but the whole world as we know it. It’s a fantastic setup for some serious drama and adventure!
Agatha All Along Takes Viewers Down the Witches’ Road
This gripping series centers around a complex main character who isn’t simply a hero or a villain – she’s somewhere in between.
Agatha and a group of unlikely companions began a perilous journey along the Witches’ Road, each hoping to achieve a deeply held desire. The road is incredibly dangerous, and few members of Agatha’s witch community survive the trip. Along the way, Agatha must face her own flaws – her self-centeredness, feelings of isolation, and unresolved anger.
The show reveals Agatha’s tragic past, explaining how her difficult life turned her into the ruthless witch we see. Agatha All Along doesn’t hold back from showing the dark and disturbing events of her life and the terrible things she’s done. Importantly, the series also highlights Agatha’s identity as a queer woman, making it a standout LGBTQIA+ series on television today.
The Magicians Showcases a Dangerous Magical World
The Magicians is a five-season drama series inspired by Lev Grossman’s novels. It centers on Quentin Coldwater, who learns that the magical world from the books he loves is actually true.
I’m really hooked on this series about Coldwater, a guy who goes to Brakebills, a university for learning magic. It’s not just about learning tricks though; he’s diving deep into how magic actually works, and discovering a hidden world that’s way more dangerous than anyone realizes. Honestly, it’s a surprisingly dark and realistic take on fantasy, and a lot of viewers have even…
This show tackles difficult subjects such as trauma, depression, and various mental health issues, alongside intense violence, sexual content, and addiction. It also explores the repercussions of magic use, where magic itself is powered by suffering – it simply can’t function without it.
American Horror Story Keeps Revisiting Coven for a Reason
American Horror Story is a continuing horror series where each season features a brand new, self-contained story. While each season is different, some characters do reappear, linking the seasons together within a shared universe.
Magic and the supernatural are common in American Horror Story, but Season 3, called “Coven,” focuses entirely on a group of witches descended from those in Salem. The season centers around their struggle to survive, particularly when their leader becomes sick and they await the emergence of a new, powerful witch to take her place.
As a huge fan, I was so thrilled when the witches from ‘Coven’ came back in Season 8, ‘Apocalypse’! They were essential in the fight against the Antichrist, using their incredible powers to try and save everyone. And now, knowing they’re coming back again just proves how special ‘Coven’ is – it’s truly become one of the most iconic seasons of American Horror Story and a real landmark in horror TV.
