After Lana Del Rey’s song “First Light” was announced as the theme for the new James Bond game, fans expected a title sequence reminiscent of classic Bond films. IO Interactive delivered, and the song fits the visuals well, although the imagery is quite varied and dynamic.
The film opens with a striking contrast of light and shadow. A shot of large chess pieces against the backdrop of explosions, with a knight being hit, creates a sense of foreboding. This quickly shifts to a celebratory atmosphere with fireworks and Bond making a grand entrance, described as being drawn to the excitement “like a moth to a flame.” However, even amidst this spectacle, he remains under observation, suggesting that danger lurks even in seemingly safe, public settings.
The title sequence fits the established style of the series and successfully captures the feeling of being James Bond, staying true to IO Interactive’s vision for the game.
The new James Bond game, 007 First Light, will be released on May 27th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. The Nintendo Switch 2 version has been pushed back to sometime this summer. Although many story details are still a mystery – including who the villainous 009 is – the game’s ending was accidentally revealed by the Indonesian Ratings Board, so be careful if you want to avoid spoilers before it comes out.
