Some movie twists fall flat – they’re not even enjoyably bad. While controversial twists like the one in Remember Me get talked about, we’re focusing on truly weak examples, such as the aliens’ vulnerability to water in Signs, the surprising family connection revealed for Rey in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the alien plotline in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and the bizarre reveal of Matthew McConaughey’s character in Serenity. However, today we’re shifting gears to look at the best movie twists – the ones that really work.
These surprising plot twists initially shocked audiences and still manage to be startling today. While many people now know what happens, that only proves how well-crafted and memorable those twists truly are.
7) Vulture Is Liz’s Dad in Spider-Man: Homecoming

I’ll never forget seeing Spider-Man: Homecoming in theaters. Everyone was shocked when Michael Keaton’s Vulture opened the door right as Peter arrived to pick up Liz for prom. That twist really elevated the movie, making it feel more focused on Peter’s personal life than most Marvel adventures. It also made Vulture’s motivations – doing crime to provide for his family – much more relatable and impactful.
6) Verbal Kint Is Keyser Söze in The Usual Suspects

Just like many films and TV shows playfully copied the slow-motion effects from The Matrix, a lot of creative works have referenced the big twist at the end of The Usual Suspects. That’s when we find out Verbal Kint has been inventing a story using objects in the detective’s office, all to save himself. He tells a tale about a ruthless criminal named Keyser Söze who eliminated everyone involved with him, and it turns out that name is the only real part of the story – because Verbal Kint is Keyser Söze, and vice versa.
5) It’s Not a Different Planet in Planet of the Apes

Rod Serling, the mind behind The Twilight Zone, crafted a truly unforgettable movie ending. He cleverly establishes a world where apes rule over humans in Planet of the Apes, making us believe the setting isn’t Earth, despite its familiar plants and air. The shocking twist, of course, is that it is Earth, but thousands of years in the future.
4) The Narrator Is Tyler Durden in Fight Club

In Fight Club, the Narrator and Tyler Durden seem like completely separate people, making the film’s big reveal – that they’re actually the same person – a genuine surprise, especially if you haven’t read the novel. While the idea of a split personality isn’t new, Fight Club executes it exceptionally well.
3) Bruce Willis Is a Ghost in The Sixth Sense

While it only ranks third on our list, the twist in The Sixth Sense – that Dr. Malcolm Crowe is actually a ghost – is arguably the most famous movie twist ever, and for good reason. It truly shocked audiences when the film came out in 1999, and it still holds up today. The reason it’s so effective is because the entire movie draws you into his connection with young Cole Sear, whether you realize he’s a ghost or not.
2) “What’s In the Box?!” in Se7en

Horror movies often build suspense by suggesting terror rather than explicitly showing it. In Jaws, the shark is frightening even before it appears, and Halloween hints at Michael Myers’ violence without excessive gore. Similarly, in Se7en, the anticipation of what’s inside the box left for Detective Mills is deeply unsettling. The scene culminating in Lieutenant Somerset’s desperate pleas – urging Mills to hand over his gun and for John Doe to be silent – is arguably one of the most intensely gripping ever filmed.
1) The Identity of Luke’s Father in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

The original Star Wars film offered subtle clues about Darth Vader’s history as a Jedi and his relationship with Obi-Wan Kenobi. But it was in The Empire Strikes Back that audiences received a shocking revelation: Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father. This discovery created a complex and dramatic conflict between them. Thankfully, Luke’s eventual success in redeeming his father proved to be a powerful and satisfying part of Return of the Jedi.
