For many comic book fans, especially those who grew up in the 1990s, collecting trading cards was a huge part of the experience. If you were a 90s comic book enthusiast, you probably also collected cards featuring your favorite heroes, like those from Fleer Ultra, Flair, Marvel Masterpieces, and Metal. Trading cards are popular again today – one recent collection even sold for over $65,000 at auction – but it wasn’t quite a complete set.
A nearly complete 1992 SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces card set recently sold for $65,625 at Heritage Auctions – a very high price for a set missing just one card. What made it so valuable was that all the other cards were graded a perfect Gem Mint 10 by PSA. It makes you wonder if the set would have sold for even more if it had been complete.

The High-Grade Marvel Masterpieces Set Could Have Gone For Even More With Its Missing Card

Released in 1992, the Skybox Marvel Masterpieces set feels like a trip back in time, showcasing characters with designs specific to that decade. It features a fantastic lineup of heroes and villains, including Black Widow in her gray suit, Black Cat, Archangel, Daredevil, Cyclops, Captain America, Elektra, Dr. Doom, Gambit, Hulk, Invisible Woman, Magneto, and the always popular Darkhawk.
The set is missing card number 100, which is actually just a checklist of all the cards included. While it’s technically a 99-card set, the fact that the missing card is simply a summary of the characters doesn’t seem to have affected the value of the rest of the collection.
It’s interesting to wonder if the item would have sold for even more if it included all 100 pieces. It’s difficult to know for sure, but it’s likely a complete set would have increased the price, even if the last piece was just a simple checklist. Collectors often value completeness, and since it already sold for $65,000, a full set might have fetched $66,000 or more.
