A shocking death has occurred at Holby City Hospital in the final episode of Casualty’s ‘Learning Curve’ series.
The Emergency Department recently faced significant challenges, including a failed inspection by the quality care commission, which led to the loss of its ability to handle major trauma cases. As a result, all patients requiring major trauma care are now being sent to St. James’ Hospital, located across town.
During a lumbar puncture performed by resident doctors Matty Linlaker and Kim Chang, the patient, struggling with an eating disorder, became disoriented and mistakenly assured Dr. Linlaker it was okay to insert the needle into the incorrect area of her back.
With pressure mounting, she decided not to pursue a medical career.
Flynn Byron offered Matty a clinical fellowship, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that Kim would have been offered the position if she hadn’t left Holby.
While Kim was dealing with her situation, her mentor, Stevie Nash (Elinor Lawless), spoke with Kim’s father, Wei. He was concerned about why Kim had stopped working and wanted answers. Matty happened to overhear their conversation and decided to visit Kim at home, hoping to convince her to reconsider her decision.

I heard someone yelling at the door, and when I opened it, I was horrified. She was lying there, completely out cold, and there was blood everywhere. It was a truly shocking sight.
He called emergency services and told them Indie Jankowski (Naomi Wakszlak) was in life-threatening danger and needed immediate medical attention to stop severe bleeding. Matty was relieved when a helicopter arrived with paramedics. While they took over care, he found a box of diet pills and laxatives, along with a journal filled with everything Stevie had ever said to her.
The hospital staff received news about Kim’s health, and Stevie, feeling incredibly guilty, had just found out Kim was struggling with an eating disorder. She immediately ran to the landing site to greet the helicopter, but was confronted by an angry Matty.

He began to reel off parts of Kim’s journal, leaving Stevie guilt-ridden.
The medical team found that Kim’s organs were failing, a direct result of the damaging effects of the weight loss drugs she had been taking. Despite their efforts, her condition rapidly deteriorated. She began bleeding profusely, and Stevie and Dylan were devastated as attempts to revive her with CPR proved unsuccessful.
Matty frantically tried to revive her, with dad Dylan Keogh (William Beck) having to drag him away.

At the end of the show, Stevie had the difficult task of speaking at Kim’s funeral. Feeling responsible for the tragedy, she had trouble getting through the speech.
Matty told Dylan he’d accepted the Clinical Fellowship. They both agreed to take things slowly and build a father-son relationship over time.
The new season of Casualty, titled ‘Lethal Legacy’, starts next Saturday! Will the ED staff still be dealing with the aftermath of Kim’s death?
