Jean Grey is known for having different costumes throughout her appearances. In the first season of X-Men ’97, she wore two different suits. Now, with Season 2 coming to Disney+ this summer, we’re getting our first complete look at a third animated costume. It’s revealed on a new Funko Pop! figure (number 1597) exclusive to Entertainment Earth. This “Wasteland” suit is actually the fourth overall costume Marvel Studios has created for Jean Grey, including one from a live-action movie.
The character’s ‘Wasteland’ look is a significant change from her Season 1 outfits. While she primarily wore blue and yellow, inspired by the classic X-Men colors, the new design features a tougher, rust-red and brown color scheme.

The image depicts Grey wearing a tight-fitting red suit, with a dark brown tactical jacket over top. A yellow ‘X’ is visible on her chest, and she’s wearing fingerless gloves and combat boots. She’s holding a glowing blue psionic star, which represents her ability to move things with her mind. Her outfit is tougher and shows signs of wear, reflecting the events of the first season.

Wow, Season 1 left us with the X-Men totally separated and lost in time! Cyclops and Jean ended up way in the future, around 3960 AD, with these powerful psychic warriors called the Clan Askani. It was crazy because they actually met a young Nathan Summers – their future son! Now, Season 2 starts right there in that future timeline, and the new ‘Wasteland’ suit is made for that harsh environment. I was so excited to see the Funko Pop figure because it perfectly matches the look Marvel used on the official Season 2 poster they released a few months ago!

The new poster revealed Jean’s updated, futuristic design, showing all the characters in a grid. However, it only showed the top portion of her new look.

However, the Funko Pop figure provides the best look yet at Jean Grey’s updated costume, showcasing the entire outfit.
Other Costumes Jean Grey Has Sported Under Marvel Studios
Before getting her signature Wasteland look, Grey wore two different outfits in the first season of X-Men ’97, each reflecting her character’s development. For most of the season, she wore the team’s classic blue and yellow uniform: a dark navy bodysuit with yellow shoulders and a belt featuring the X-Men logo.

This suit was with her during the show’s most intense scenes, including the aftermath of Genosha’s destruction and the battle against the Prime Sentinels. Plus, it helps her look like a cohesive part of the team.

The ninth episode, “Tolerance Is Extinction, Part 2,” featured a noticeable change in costumes. When the X-Men gathered at the remains of Xavier’s mansion, they wore outfits inspired by their original comic book appearances. Specifically, Jean Grey sported the iconic green miniskirt dress and yellow pointed mask she first wore in X-Men #39, a 1967 issue written by Roy Thomas.

This outfit is much older than most of what people think of when they picture the character now. It’s the original Marvel Girl look, from when Jean Grey first went by that name, and the X-Men were a small team of five teenagers who wore matching uniforms while learning to control their abilities at Xavier’s school.

The character’s design was inspired by her appearance in the 1990s animated X-Men series, a look fans instantly recognized. Its return in Episode 9 symbolized the team returning to their origins as things began to crumble – a final, nostalgic reminder of happier times before the season finale scattered them throughout history.

Looking at Jean’s three outfits together shows her emotional journey. The blue and yellow suit represents her when things are good with the team and the situation feels under control. The green Marvel Girl dress shows us who she used to be, a reminder of an older version of the X-Men that’s gone by the time the show is set.

In the distant future, Jean Grey transforms into the Wasteland suit – a hardened, battle-ready version of herself, far removed from her usual appearance. This new form will allow her storyline in Season 2 to explore a completely different path than what fans have seen before.
The fourth costume for Jean Grey comes from live-action media. Sadie Sink, known for her role in Stranger Things, is heavily rumored to be playing Jean Grey in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, scheduled for release on July 31st. While Marvel and Sony haven’t made an official announcement, film insider Jeff Sneider reported the casting, and clues in the movie’s trailer seem to confirm it.

The trailer features a character from behind wearing a green jacket with a yellow hood. The colors, along with red hair and displays of mind control, strongly suggest this is Jean Grey. Photos taken on the set before the trailer came out showed Sadie Sink wearing similar clothes – a green jacket, camouflage pants, and combat boots. The outfit isn’t a typical superhero costume, but fits someone who might be a mutant trying to blend in or being held captive.

From what I can gather, the movie centers around the Department of Damage Control going after people with special abilities. It looks like the character played by Sink gets captured at some point, but manages to escape – that’s where things really seem to kick off!

It’s still unclear if the character will get a traditional superhero costume, but even their everyday clothes use a green and yellow color scheme that Marvel fans will immediately associate with Jean Grey.
