Sir Ian McKellen, famous for playing Magneto, is reportedly joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his character is expected to cause significant chaos.
As a Marvel fanatic, I’m already counting down the days until December 2026! The Russo brothers are back to direct what sounds like an epic team-up, Avengers: Doomsday. The stakes? Nothing less than the entire multiverse, threatened by a villainous Doctor Doom – and get this, it’s Robert Downey Jr. taking on the role after all his years as Iron Man! They’re bringing back so many familiar faces – Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan… basically, a who’s who of the MCU. And it’s not a one-off; we’re already slated for a sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, in 2027. This is shaping up to be a massive event for Marvel fans.
Last year, Marvel surprised fans by announcing that several actors from the original X-Men movies would be returning for future projects. Along with Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer, and Alan Cumming are all set to reprise their roles.
In January, actor Ian McKellen, known for his role in X-Men, jokingly hinted at a significant event in the upcoming Doomsday film, saying he had “destroyed New Jersey” during filming. He quickly clarified that he shouldn’t have revealed that detail, but his comment still sparked a lot of discussion and theories about what to expect from the movie.
The Russo brothers recently clarified a previous statement in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Joe Russo said he believes a comment about destroying New Jersey was a mistake, stating, “I don’t think he destroys New Jersey.” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige then added that New Jersey does, in fact, have a role in the film, noting “there’s a New Jersey presence.”
In addition to setting the record straight about McKellen and other returning X-Men actors, Feige talked about the challenge and anticipation of reuniting these popular characters on screen. He noted, “I was involved with the first few, a very long time ago.”
As a critic, I recently spoke with a Marvel executive about their approach to bringing back beloved characters. They explained that, understanding how much fans – generations of them, really – love these heroes, they knew they had to make the most of their return. Deadpool & Wolverine felt like the perfect starting point, a chance to explore the possibilities of colliding different universes, but crucially, a story where you still genuinely care about all the characters involved. It’s about giving the fans what they want, but also doing something creatively exciting with it.
Kevin Feige explained that choosing a well-known comic book storyline involving multiple Earths, universes, and timelines was a deliberate decision to take advantage of the Russo Brothers’ ability to merge different parts of the Marvel Universe. He added that this approach allows them to bring together actors from various franchises in movies.
Avengers: Doomsday releases in theaters on December 18, 2026.
