DC Gives Fans the DCEU/DCU Crossover They Never Saw Coming

Although the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) has been replaced by the new DC Universe (DCU), comic book fans of both versions recently got a nice surprise. It doesn’t feel that long ago that Man of Steel launched what was initially intended to be DC’s answer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unfortunately, disappointing ticket sales and harsh reviews led to a major overhaul, resulting in the DCU now being led by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

I’m excited about the direction of the new DC Universe, but it was hard to see elements of the previous DC Extended Universe disappear, particularly losing talented actors like Jason Momoa. He truly made Aquaman a popular and compelling character. Fortunately, the DCU is keeping Momoa on board by recasting him as Lobo! While we won’t see him as both Aquaman and Lobo at the same time, this is the next best thing, and it’s great that the comics allow for such transitions.

DC Comics Pits Lobo Against Aquaman (In Space, Of Course)

In the second issue of the Lobo comic, created by Skottie Young and team, Lobo is preparing for a new job: being the star of a reality show documenting his life as a bounty hunter. He’s frustrated by the limitations of being on TV, like having to wear a specific costume and avoiding profanity. While he still gets to hunt bounties, every move he makes is closely watched. Lobo tries to follow the show’s rules, but it’s proving difficult for everyone involved.

Lobo learns his show isn’t performing well enough to justify its cost. To try and improve ratings, his producers decide he needs to fight a real hero. Conveniently, a bounty has been placed on a hero who’s currently traveling through deep space, so Lobo is sent to capture Aquaman, who is busy trying to unite all life in the universe.

Lobo tracks down Aquaman and starts a fight, but Aquaman is too busy laughing at Lobo’s outfit and the thought of him being on a reality TV show. Annoyed, Lobo attacks Aquaman, who is eager to fight back. The battle is incredibly rough, with plenty of bloodshed and dirty tactics from Lobo. Ultimately, Aquaman manages to wound Lobo with his trident, but the fight becomes pointless when Lobo learns his reality show was canceled right then and there.

Lobo Gives Us the Crossover the Movie Franchises Can’t

Aquaman and Lobo have clashed before – famously in the 1994 Aquaman #4 comic, where their fight ended when they discovered they were both trying to protect dolphins. However, a new fight feels different now that Jason Momoa has played both characters. While a crossover between the Aquaman and Lobo franchises seems unlikely in film, it’s definitely possible within the world of comic books.

This comic doesn’t actually show a fight between the movie versions of Lobo and Aquaman, but it strongly hints at one, especially considering Jason Momoa will soon be playing Lobo in the ‘Supergirl’ series. It’s simply enjoyable to see these two characters clash after years of not interacting. It’s a shame the fight wasn’t longer, particularly since Aquaman is currently at the peak of his power.

I’m really excited by the idea of the comics expanding on the stories we see in the movies, or even showing us how the universe evolves in different ways. Comics are perfect for that kind of behind-the-scenes, self-aware fun, especially when it comes to superheroes. It’s great knowing that even if certain team-ups, like Lobo and Aquaman, don’t happen on screen, we can still see them play out in the comics!
