Mint creator pitches spin-off for key character and addresses the show’s future

With the debut of the new BBC series Mint, creator Charlotte Regan has hinted at the possibility of future seasons and shared which character she’d be most interested in exploring in a spin-off show.

In an interview with TopMob and alongside Benjamin Coyle-Larner, Regan discussed the parts of the show she was most excited for viewers to experience, highlighting scenes involving Lindsay Duncan’s character, Ollie.

Ollie is the powerful and intimidating matriarch of the family at the center of the show. She’s Dylan’s mother and Emma’s grandmother, and Regan can’t wait for viewers to get to know her.

I’m always eager for audiences to experience Ollie’s story and see Lindsay’s portrayal of the character. It really stands out from her other roles – I was immediately struck by how completely she transformed into Ollie when I first saw her on set. I can’t wait for everyone to meet Ollie through Lindsay’s performance.

Regan jokingly suggested a spin-off show following Ollie on a lads’ holiday, imagining lots of fun, drinking, and general holiday antics, if the BBC were interested in funding it. He added with a laugh that it would involve ‘pints, pints, pints’.

I recently heard Regan talk about coming back for another season of Mint, and it sounds like she’s just taking a break right now. She didn’t say ‘no’ to returning, but she’s definitely enjoying some downtime at the moment.

She explained that it’s helpful to step back and let the audience interpret your work, which can also help you understand your own feelings about it. It’s a bit of a paradox – you both want their input and need distance to process your own reaction.

During the interview, Regan discussed her character, Ollie, explaining that she based the role on grandmothers and other women she’s known throughout her life. She noted that it’s unusual to see characters like Ollie represented on screen.

I didn’t want her stuck at home with typical homemaking activities like baking and knitting. She’s a very strong person and likely holds the whole family together, if I’m honest.

The series features Emma Laird, Sam Riley, Laura Fraser, and Lewis Gribben, alongside stars Fiona Coyle-Larner and Brian Duncan.

You can watch the new series, Mint, on BBC One starting Monday, April 20th at 9pm. All episodes will also be available on BBC iPlayer from 6am that same day.
