The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker First Set Sail on the GameCube
The GameCube was home to two outstanding Legend of Zelda games. The first, The Wind Waker, was a groundbreaking title that revitalized the series with its unique art style and innovative sailing. It also presented a memorable take on the iconic Triforce heroes, alongside challenging bosses, engaging dungeons, and a particularly epic final battle against Ganondorf.
But the fun doesn’t stop with this game! Link’s story continues in two sequels on the Nintendo DS, and the original has even been updated for modern consoles. That’s a sure sign The Wind Waker is a timeless classic.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Sent the GameCube Off in Style
Released as the last GameCube game, Twilight Princess is a fantastic conclusion to the console’s library. It stands out with its more mature and fantastical look, offering excellent gameplay, challenging dungeons, and a memorable companion character, Midna, who’s become a fan favorite.
This game is another fantastic addition to the Zelda series, demonstrating just how beloved it has become. If you didn’t enjoy the colorful, cartoonish look of The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess offers a more serious and mature experience that might be a better fit.
Mario Kart: Double Dash is a Kart Racing Classic
Out of all the Mario Kart games, Double Dash is the most unpredictable. That’s because each kart has two drivers. While one person can control both, playing with a friend makes things even more hectic. Add in the fast-paced racing and doubled-up items from all the extra characters, and you get a Mario Kart game that really lets loose and embraces the fun of chaos.
The fun two-player racing mode hasn’t been included in recent games, with developers now focusing on features like zero gravity and open-world gameplay. However, at least the GameCube version stood out with a truly unique experience.
Super Mario Sunshine Doesn’t Play by the Rules
Super Mario Sunshine stands out from other 3D Mario games. Instead of just jumping, you spend a lot of time using a water-powered jetpack called F.L.U.D.D. to get around and beat enemies. The story is also pretty unusual, introducing Bowser Jr. and a plot where he believes Princess Peach is his mother. Plus, all the characters are voiced, though the voice acting quality varies.
When everything comes together, it creates a truly unique and fun gaming experience. Every Mario game attempts to innovate, and this one is particularly impressive in that regard.
Luigi’s Mansion Gives the Green Plumber the Proper Spotlight
Okay, so when people talk about Mario games trying different things, Luigi’s Mansion was a huge one for me. It was awesome putting Luigi in the lead for once! The story is basically about him going into this haunted house to rescue Mario after ghosts snatch him. Honestly, the best part was hunting those ghosts and exploring the house itself – it was so well designed, and they really built on those ideas in the later games.
The original mansion has become a memorable setting in many Mario games, even appearing as a stage in Super Smash Bros. Luigi’s Mansion is an enjoyable game that also helped establish Luigi as a more important character in the Mario universe, which is a great thing for fans.
Super Smash Bros. Melee Was a Crossover Event That Couldn’t be Missed
Super Smash Bros. Melee is a fighting game that brings together characters from across the Nintendo universe for exciting four-player battles. This second game in the series offered more stages and characters, quicker action, and plenty of hidden content to discover. Whether you’re playing solo or with friends, you can easily spend hours enjoying everything Melee has to offer.
Super Smash Bros. Melee for GameCube is a massive game, considered by many to be one of the best in the series and a truly legendary fighting game. It earns all the praise it receives.
Metroid Prime Pushed the Franchise in a New Direction
The Metroid series started as a 2D adventure, but Metroid Prime changed everything. It brought Samus Aran’s story into a 3D, first-person world while keeping the familiar gameplay fans loved. Seeing the exploration, item collecting, and intense boss battles in 3D was a huge step forward.
This game broadened the series’ appeal and sparked a number of follow-ups, the most recent of which came out on the Nintendo Switch 2 last year. Metroid Prime is a landmark title for the franchise and showcases why Samus is one of Nintendo’s most iconic heroes.
Animal Crossing is a Relaxing Good Time
The original Animal Crossing is a great choice for people who don’t typically enjoy video games. It drops you into a town filled with talking animals, and lets you create your own unique experience. You can design your home, get to know the animal villagers, and even donate your catches to the town museum.
This game encourages you to unwind and savor life’s simple pleasures, like spending time with friends. Animal Crossing is a charming and heartwarming experience, proving that Nintendo excels even when it prioritizes a relaxed pace.
F-Zero GX is the Fastest Racer Around
Both Mario Kart: Double Dash and F-Zero GX were known for their frantic energy, but they achieved it in different ways. F-Zero GX stood out with its incredibly high speeds and challenging tracks where players raced against over 20 opponents. It offered a unique racing experience, and the addition of a story mode—a first for the series—made it particularly memorable.
The series has been quiet for years, with only a few small additions that haven’t been very successful. If the franchise is revived, future installments should follow the model established by GX.
Resident Evil 4 is a Franchise Best
Originally released for the GameCube, Resident Evil 4 is now considered one of the best horror games available on any platform. Its focus on action, as Leon S. Kennedy attempts to rescue Ashley Graham from a parasitic infection, redefined the Resident Evil series and influenced many other games in the horror genre.
Both the original and the 2023 version of Resident Evil 4 are truly exceptional horror games. It’s worth remembering, though, that this fantastic game first launched on Nintendo consoles.
