The West Coast Avengers were created in 1984 and offered a fresh take on the superhero team dynamic. The comic series was special because it allowed Hawkeye to prove himself as a capable leader, moving beyond his usual complaining. It also relocated some well-known heroes to California for new adventures, while the main Avengers team stayed in New York, effectively giving the Avengers a presence on both coasts. Starting with a popular four-issue limited series, the West Coast Avengers went on to have their own long-running comic, lasting for nine years and 102 issues – and even changed its name to Avengers West Coast partway through its run.
Hawkeye assembled a fantastic team of heroes, each with their own personal struggles. Things eventually escalated when the government dispatched U.S. Agent to rein them in, and finally, Captain America intervened to stop them. But before all that drama, the West Coast Avengers were known as one of the most enjoyable teams in Marvel Comics.
10) Hawkeye

Hawkeye started the West Coast Avengers and was their initial field leader with his wife, Mockingbird. Although a skilled tactician, he wasn’t able to prevent internal issues that caused the team to fall apart, eventually leading him to lose interest in leading altogether. Unlike most heroes, Hawkeye doesn’t have any superpowers – he relies purely on his training and combat skills. However, he’s widely considered the best archer in the Marvel Universe, boasting incredible accuracy and a diverse arsenal of specialized arrows. He’s proven himself capable of defeating powerful opponents, including Taskmaster, Crossfire, and even members of the Masters of Evil, all on his own.
9) Tigra

Tigra, whose real name is Greer Nelson, became a cat-person after a mystical ritual saved her life when she was shot. Before becoming Tigra, she operated as the Cat, using enhanced strength and agility. As Tigra, she’s incredibly strong – able to bend steel – and possesses superhuman speed, agility, and the sharp senses of a tiger. She also has retractable claws that can cut through almost anything. While with the West Coast Avengers, she struggled to maintain control and avoid giving in to her animal instincts, which caused issues. She eventually left the team in part because of their policy against killing.
8) Mockingbird

Mockingbird was an original member of the West Coast Avengers and helped Hawkeye, her husband at the time, establish the team. Though not as physically powerful as Tigra, Mockingbird is more precise and benefits from her training as a SHIELD agent and spy. Like Hawkeye, she doesn’t have superpowers, but she’s in peak physical condition and a master of both combat and strategy. Later, she received a special version of the Super-Soldier Serum, combined with the Infinity Formula, making her even more formidable. Even without relying on immense strength, she’s consistently the most dangerous person present.
7) Moon Knight

I’ve always been fascinated by Moon Knight. Like Mockingbird, he started out as a highly skilled operative – a CIA agent and mercenary, actually. But what really sets him apart is that he has superpowers! It’s incredible how, after nearly dying in Egypt, he was granted divine strength by the moon god Khonshu, and that power waxes and wanes with the phases of the moon. He almost didn’t make the cut to join the Avengers because some people worried about his mental state, and honestly, I can see why. He just couldn’t agree with their rule about not killing, and that created some serious friction.
6) Hank Pym

Hank Pym was one of the original Avengers as Ant-Man, and throughout his career, he adopted several different heroic identities, including Giant-Man, Goliath, and Yellowjacket. He eventually faced personal struggles that led to his retirement from active superhero work. He later joined the West Coast Avengers, not as a fighter, but as a scientific advisor and to manage their base. Despite this change, his incredible intelligence made him the team’s smartest member, and he could still be a powerful ally when necessary, utilizing his Pym Particles when his teammates needed help.
5) The Wasp

Janet Van Dyne is a founding member of the Avengers and a highly effective leader, having proven her abilities time and again. She was even involved in naming the original team. Like her former husband, Hank Pym, she uses Pym Particles to change size and can unleash powerful “stinger blasts” capable of defeating even supervillains. When Hank Pym experienced a mental health crisis, Janet joined the West Coast Avengers and successfully guided the team, a task that proved difficult for Hawkeye.
4) Iron Man

The Iron Man who originally joined the West Coast Avengers wasn’t actually Tony Stark. At that time, Tony Stark had stepped down and James Rhodes was the one wearing the Iron Man suit. Rhodes kept his identity a secret from his teammates, and it took a while for everyone to realize they already knew Tony Stark had been Iron Man all along. Eventually, he told them the truth and became a reliable teammate. Later, Tony Stark returned to being Iron Man, and James Rhodes became known as War Machine. Although Rhodes was an original member of the team, Stark joined later on. Regardless of who was inside the suit, Iron Man has always been one of Marvel’s strongest Avengers.
3) Vision

Let me tell you about Vision – he’s a fascinating character with a really complex history. Initially, he was built by Ultron as essentially his heir, but things took a dramatic turn when Vision switched sides and became a key member of the Avengers. He even had a stint with the West Coast Avengers, which led to a truly compelling storyline called ‘Vision Quest.’ Basically, the government got their hands on him, disassembled him, and Hank Pym had to put him back together, but unfortunately, it meant losing his memories and personality. And let me tell you, this guy is powerful. We’re talking able to go toe-to-toe with Thor thanks to his ability to control his own density – it’s an amazing power to witness on screen!
2) Wonder Man

Wonder Man is actually Simon Williams, a formerly wealthy man who faced jail time for stealing money. He gained superpowers thanks to Baron Zemo and became one of the original members of the team, conveniently already working as an actor in California. This led to problems, though, because Vision was created using Simon’s brain patterns. In a storyline called “Vision Quest,” Simon refused to let them use his brainwaves again, causing friction with Scarlet Witch, who was trying to restore her husband. Wonder Man is incredibly strong – at a level comparable to Hulk and Thor – and is essentially immortal, consistently returning to life even after death.
1) Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, is incredibly powerful – considered one of the strongest characters in the Marvel Universe, and the most powerful member of the West Coast Avengers during their time together. Originally believing she was a mutant, it was revealed she’s the daughter of another Scarlet Witch, Natalya Maximoff, and inherited her mother’s unique chaos magic, making her a nexus being. This allows her to change reality itself, as demonstrated by events like the creation of House of M. A period of heartbreak after losing her husband, the Vision, nearly led her down a dark path during her time with the West Coast Avengers. Many believe she’s the most powerful Avenger ever, and in 2026, she became Marvel’s new Sorcerer Supreme after the events of One World Under Doom.
