Scrubs Revival Season 2 Will Officially Fix One of the Biggest Fan Complaints

Fans generally loved the first season of the Scrubs revival, but many wished they’d seen more of one particular character. Luckily, the upcoming second season seems to be addressing that issue. Scrubs returned in February 2026 with its tenth season overall, marking the first season of the revival, and brought back the original cast—Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Ken Jenkins, and John C. McGinley—but one of these five fan favorites had very limited screen time, which was the biggest criticism of the season.

The season finale hinted that John C. McGinley will have a significantly larger role in the second season, which is great news for the Scrubs reboot.

Dr. Cox Will Finally Be Back on Scrubs in the Bigger Role He Deserves

John C. McGinley has previously explained his absence from the first season of the Scrubs reboot was due to scheduling issues. He’s now optimistic that those conflicts have resolved, allowing him to participate more fully in season two and play a significant role in the storyline, as originally intended. This is particularly important given the events of the season finale and how they impact his character’s relationship with J.D.

The season began with J.D. returning to Sacred Heart Hospital after several years working as a personal doctor. To his surprise, Dr. Cox appointed him as the new chief of medicine, putting him in charge of the incoming interns. Turk also took on a new role as chief of surgery. Elliot’s return was complicated by the fact that she and J.D. had divorced. The season ended with a major focus on Dr. Cox, who collapsed after making a visit in the episode before the finale.

What Will Happen to Dr. Cox in Scrubs Reboot Series?

In the season finale, J.D. discovers Dr. Cox is seriously ill with microscopic polyangiitis, a dangerous autoimmune disease. Despite J.D.’s efforts to help, Dr. Cox’s condition worsens, and he finally confides in Jordan. This sets up a major storyline for the next season, focusing on Dr. Cox’s fight for his health and J.D.’s struggle to come to terms with everything.

This development allows for more serious and heartfelt storylines, moving beyond the show’s usual humor. While the show is known for its comedy, exploring Dr. Cox’s vulnerability – especially facing a health crisis – will reveal a more human side to a character previously seen as larger than life. This will deeply impact his relationship with Jordan, who recently returned, and help J.D. grow into the doctor Dr. Cox always believed he could become. This emotional depth has the potential to make the second season even stronger than the successful first season.

Season 2 of Scrubs could have even more exciting developments. Not only might John C. McGinley have a larger role, but a fan-favorite character made a surprise return in the finale: Neil Flynn as the Janitor. Now the chief custodian for the joint commission, he was at Sacred Heart for a safety check. This also introduces a new storyline, as the Janitor’s son is already working at the hospital as Maintenance Guy (Darcy Michael), potentially becoming J.D.’s new rival.
