A filmmaker who has been collaborating with Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson is offering some insight into the speculation about a renewed conflict between them.
Nicola Marsh, the director of a new Netflix documentary about the former members of One Direction, addressed reports of a physical altercation between Zayn, 33, and Louis, 34, during filming. The alleged fight supposedly caused a renewed rift between the two former bandmates.
Nicola shared a photo on Instagram of a recent front page from The Sun newspaper, which featured the headline “Louis Punched by Zayn.” According to a screenshot published by The Independent, she captioned the post, “And there goes the last year of work.”
TopMob News has reached out to reps of Zayn and Louis but hasn’t heard back.
Adding to the speculation, fans have observed that Louis unfollowed Zayn on Instagram. He continues to follow Harry Styles, Niall Horan, and the account of the late Liam Payne, though.
Zayn, who was recently in the hospital for a health issue that hasn’t been made public, is still following Louis on social media.
Zayn and Louis have a history of conflict. Soon after Zayn left One Direction in 2015, Louis publicly criticized him in a fiery argument on social media.
Louis and his relative hadn’t spoken for years, and in 2022, he revealed they didn’t even have each other’s phone numbers.
He admitted on The Zach Sang Show that he hadn’t fully moved on from the relationship, saying he didn’t feel mature enough to let go of his frustrations. While he wasn’t sure if he was there yet, he felt he was getting closer to being able to do so.
Despite everything, Louis was willing to try and repair their relationship. He admitted that he’d often thought about the other person and hoped they were doing okay over the past two years.
“But it’s hard,” he continued. “I definitely wish him well.”
Louis and Zayn reconnected at a funeral for Liam in 2024, along with Harry and Niall, who are both 32. They also released a joint statement expressing their deep sadness over Liam’s death, saying they were ‘completely devastated.’
In a joint post on Instagram, the remaining members of One Direction said they would always cherish their memories of him and that they would miss him deeply.
They added, “We love you Liam.”

In 2016, Louis Tomlinson had a son named Freddie Reign. The following year, Liam Payne and Cheryl Cole welcomed their son, Bear Grey.
Back in 2020, rumors of a possible One Direction reunion began when Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan all started following Zayn Malik again on X (formerly Twitter).
Adding to speculation about a possible reunion, Payne mentioned to The Sun that they’d been talking frequently as the band’s 10-year anniversary approaches, which he described as a positive experience.
Malik and his then-girlfriend Gigi Hadid welcomed daughter Khai in September 2020.
Payne attended the London premiere of Tomlinson’s 2023 documentary All of Those Voices.
