Insidious: Out Of The Further – Is It Time To Let Go Of The Red-Faced Demon?

A new Insidious sequel is coming in 2026, and it feels like the right time to move beyond what made the original so popular. When Insidious first came out in 2011, it quickly became a favorite among horror fans thanks to its genuinely creepy vibe and expertly crafted scares, solidifying its place as a standout modern horror movie.

The movies that came after the first Insidious had different levels of success. While many consider Insidious: Chapter 3 the strongest sequel, Chapter 2, The Last Key, and The Red Door received a mixed response from viewers.

A new Insidious movie, titled Insidious: Out of the Further, is coming out this year, even though the series was thought to have ended three years ago. The trailer introduces a new main character named Gemma.

Like Dalton, she can project her spirit. But unlike previous astral projectors, she uniquely has the power to pull spirits from the Further and manifest them directly, without needing to possess someone else.

Overall, the film looks good and successfully captures the atmosphere of the original. It also brings a new perspective to the series, which has been running for fifteen years. However, one specific scene is concerning, as it suggests the return of the Red-Faced Demon – a villain who should have been defeated long ago.

It’s Time For Insidious To Move Past The Red-Faced Demon

The Red-Faced Demon, also known as the Lipstick-Faced Demon, is a villain who appears throughout the Insidious movies. He first lured Dalton’s spirit into the Further with the goal of possessing his body. For a long time, fans loved his unique look and scary presence. But with each new movie in the series, the character has become less compelling.

The later movies suggested he’d make a big comeback, but he didn’t appear until The Red Door. Even then, he wasn’t as scary as he was in the original film, likely because audiences expected a satisfying conclusion to his story. Instead, the fifth movie just repeated familiar themes and ended with a disappointing finale.

The trailer for Out of the Further includes a quick glimpse of the Red-Faced Demon making the same gesture he did in the first movie. This suggests he’ll be returning, but after four less-than-impressive sequels, it might be best for the series to leave the character behind.

Insidious: Out Of The Further Has Great Ideas Without The Demon In The Trailer Alone

It’s a shame the Red-Faced Demon is featured, because the trailer for Out of the Further shows glimpses of genuinely creepy moments and impressive visuals. The unsettling atmosphere of the Further feels more like the original movie than any of the follow-ups.

The ghost designs are genuinely frightening, which really emphasizes how disturbing the idea of an afterlife frozen in time is. And the trailer itself delivers some genuinely scary scenes.

One of the best parts of the game is the incredibly detailed couch fort. It creates a creepy, unsettling atmosphere that’s reminiscent of the horror found in Backrooms, which is also becoming a movie this year. The glimpses of spirits hiding within the cushions are genuinely frightening and add a fantastic new layer to the game’s scares.

Let’s hope the new Insidious movie doesn’t rely too much on the Red-Faced Demon and instead builds on the series’ original concepts. It would be a shame to see that villain take center stage again, as he’s become predictable. While he’s definitely a memorable antagonist, the series needs to move forward and explore fresh storylines.
