The creators of Stranger Things are launching a new sci-fi series soon, and it appears to have many of the same elements that made Stranger Things a hit. Stranger Things is already one of Netflix’s biggest successes – its last two seasons were the third and fourth most popular seasons ever, surpassed only by the first season of Wednesday and Adolescence.
With the huge success of the sci-fi show, it’s been fascinating to watch what the Duffer brothers plan to do next after Stranger Things wraps up, especially considering the mixed reactions to its final season. While the last chapter wasn’t a complete hit with everyone, the Duffer brothers have a strong history of creating popular shows, which suggests their future projects will likely be successful as well.
After wrapping up Stranger Things, the Duffer brothers worked on a different type of show. They’re now preparing a Stranger Things spinoff called Tales From ’85. But their next project, releasing next month, is another intriguing story with a similar feel to Stranger Things, though it tells a completely new tale. This shift back to a familiar genre after trying something different is noteworthy.
May 2026 Bring Us Another Sci-Fi Netflix Release That Involves The Duffer Bros
Following Stranger Things, the Duffer brothers created the horror series Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, which premiered in March 2026. Now, they’re bringing another sci-fi series to audiences with The Boroughs. While not their first postStranger Things project, The Boroughs*—where Matt and Ross Duffer serve as executive producers—will be available all at once on May 21, 2026, with all eight episodes released on the same day.
The setup for the series The Boroughs introduces a mysterious and dangerous presence threatening the residents of a retirement community. Faced with this threat, a group of residents team up to uncover the truth and find a way to protect their home.
Considering how popular the first season of Stranger Things was, The Boroughs has a lot of promise. The Duffer brothers, creators of Stranger Things, could offer valuable guidance on launching a big sci-fi story in a seemingly normal setting – especially since The Boroughs also features well-known actors like Alfred Molina and Geena Davis.
Although the characters in The Boroughs are older than those we first met in Stranger Things, the new show seems to have similar storytelling elements that could attract Stranger Things viewers and help it become popular on Netflix.
The Boroughs Already Looks Similar To Stranger Things In Some Key Ways
I’ve been thinking about these two shows, Stranger Things and The Boroughs, and even though they feel different – Stranger Things follows kids growing up, while The Boroughs centers on older, retired folks – what I really love is that both are about a group of people discovering something strange and potentially dangerous, and then banding together to face it. It’s that core idea of teamwork against the unknown that really grabs me in both series.
As a huge cinema fan, I’m getting the sense that both of these films will approach their sci-fi aspects in a similar way. It looks like they’ll both use the genre to introduce really unique, otherworldly creatures – things you definitely wouldn’t find in real life. And it seems the heroes in each story will face a threat they’re afraid to talk about, because nobody would believe them. That means they’ll have to take on the problem themselves, which is always exciting!
Considering everything, The Boroughs appears poised to capture a similar captivating atmosphere to the beginning of Stranger Things. This suggests it could become a popular choice for Stranger Things fans when it premieres in May, and a significant success for Netflix after Stranger Things concludes in December 2025.
