5 Years Before The Avengers, RDJ & Mark Ruffalo Teamed Up In One of the 21st Century’s Best Crime Thrillers

Before becoming famous as the Avengers, many of the actors who would eventually share the screen together actually worked on other films. For example, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. appeared in a darker movie together years before The Avengers. Chris Evans and Zoe Saldana were in the 2010 comic book adaptation The Losers, and Evans also had a romantic role with Scarlett Johansson in The Nanny Diaries back in 2007. These actors had quite a few on-screen connections even before taking on their iconic Marvel roles.

Before they were saving the world together as the Hulk and Iron Man, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. actually shared the screen in one of David Fincher’s finest films – the 2006 thriller Zodiac. It’s a genuinely chilling and gripping true-crime story, based on the infamous hunt for the Zodiac Killer. The movie focuses on Jake Gyllenhaal as a cartoonist consumed by the case, alongside Ruffalo as a determined inspector and Downey Jr. as a quick-witted journalist. Their paths all converge as they desperately try to unmask the killer, and it’s fascinating to see their dynamic before the Marvel universe brought them together.

Zodiac Is One of The Best Crime Thrillers Since 2000

David Fincher’s film Zodiac, though based on a true story and considered even grimmer than his earlier hit Se7en, didn’t perform well at the box office, earning $84.7 million against a $65 million budget. Despite this, critics praised the film when it came out, and it’s now widely regarded as one of Fincher’s masterpieces, standing alongside films like Se7en, Fight Club, and The Social Network.

Featuring an incredible cast including Brian Cox, John Carroll Lynch, Philip Baker Hall, and Donal Logue, Zodiac is a remarkably unsettling true crime film. It combines the familiar structure of a serial killer investigation with the suspenseful, 1970s style of films like All the President’s Men, creating a relentlessly tense atmosphere. This tension is largely thanks to the compelling performances from Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo’s Zodiac Performances Could Not Be More Different From Their MCU Roles

You know, I just rewatched Zodiac and it’s wild to think about how much things changed. Seeing Robert Downey Jr. as Avery, so different from his Iron Man, really hit me. And Mark Ruffalo as Toschi? Forget about Bruce Banner! It’s amazing how much range those guys have. Honestly, if you only know them from The Avengers, you’d probably not even recognize them in this dark, gripping true crime movie. It just shows what talented actors they are.

Even though Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo give excellent performances, they’re not the only reason to see Zodiac. David Fincher’s film transforms the real-life story of the Zodiac killer and its unsolved mystery into a captivating, heartbreaking, and deeply unsettling experience. The movie leaves you wanting a clear resolution, but ultimately ends in a way that feels both frighteningly realistic and perfectly appropriate.
