Absolute Batman Introduces 2 Iconic Pieces of the Dark Knight’s Lore

DC Comics’ latest version of Batman is fully committed to stopping the Joker, and two interesting changes to his backstory are giving him a boost. This new Batman, known as Absolute Batman, starts with fewer advantages than the traditional version. He doesn’t have a family fortune or a company to support his work. While he still relies on gadgets, he has to create or find them himself without spending a lot of money. Despite these financial limitations, Absolute Batman has already proven to be quite effective.

Batman consistently manages to equip himself with the tools he needs, from the famous Bat-Axe to his massive Batmobile. However, many readers have been hoping to see more of the classic Batman elements. While the first story arc hinted at the Bat Signal, it was used in a rather extravagant way – Bruce spent a fortune on a giant floodlight to send a message to Black Mask. It wasn’t until the very latest issue that the comic finally delivered the traditional aspects fans had been waiting for.

Absolute Batman Debuts a Brand-New Batmobile and Bat Signal

In Absolute Batman #19, the creative team of Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, and Tom Napolitano shows us a typical day in Gotham City. Alfred returns home to find Bruce Wayne has made some big changes to how Batman operates. Batman is currently avoiding the police, but he’s ditched his large tank-like vehicle for a new, streamlined Batmobile. This new model uses gyroscopic technology, making it incredibly agile – able to twist, withstand crashes, and change direction instantly.

Bruce hasn’t decided on a name for his new vehicle, but Harley Quinn insists on calling it the Bat-Nasty. Its biggest strength is how quickly it can be taken apart. Bruce slips away to where Harley’s crew, the Red Hoods, are waiting. Working with impressive speed, like a NASCAR pit crew, they disassemble the vehicle and conceal the pieces, allowing Batman to change his appearance and evade the police. Once the danger has passed, Bruce returns to his base – but not before a quick encounter with an old acquaintance, Waylon Jones.

Bruce Wayne is keeping a close watch on Jack Grimm IV, wondering why the reclusive billionaire has suddenly become public in Gotham. While investigating, Bruce sees a new bat symbol appear on his screens – a distress signal created by Harley Quinn. She’s designed it so people in trouble can send a direct, untraceable, and encrypted message to Batman’s cowl. Harley tries to pitch the idea to Batman, but he doesn’t seem very impressed.

Evolvution is How Absolute Batman Will Win

What’s great about reading Absolute Batman is watching Bruce Wayne constantly improve his crime-fighting methods. Even without vast wealth or a large team, he maintains the same courage, drive, and smarts as the main Batman. Plus, the ‘Bat-Nasty’ is much more practical than the huge Batmobile. It’s smaller and ideal for more challenging situations. And it’s helpful that Batman has a small group ready to assist him in keeping his new vehicle a secret.

While Bruce Wayne might not approve, Harley Quinn’s new Bat Signal is a clever improvement on the original. The old signal only worked from the police headquarters, meaning Batman often learned about crimes long after they happened. Harley’s version is an untraceable, secure line that lets people contact Batman directly, allowing him to respond much faster and without relying on the police – who, in this world, definitely don’t like him. It’s a fantastic upgrade that gives everyone the ability to summon the Bat.

It’s still a difficult time for Bruce Wayne, who’s throwing himself into his work and distancing himself from the people he cares about. Beyond that, there’s a lot of other turmoil happening. However, it’s encouraging to see Bruce constantly improving his approach to crimefighting. He’s already accomplished a lot in a short time, but to truly overcome the corruption in Gotham, he needs to keep developing new tools and strategies, like the Bat-Nasty and the Bat-Signal.
