While many Apple TV+ viewers are enjoying Jon Hamm’s popular comedy series, Stephen King hasn’t been impressed, publicly criticizing the show on social media. The show’s second season just launched earlier this month.
The new show, Your Friends & Neighbors, features Jon Hamm as Andrew “Coop” Cooper, a well-off financial manager who starts stealing from people in his neighborhood after losing his job. While many online viewers are enjoying clips of Hamm dancing in the show, critic Stephen King doesn’t find the series realistic. He posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the extravagant parties depicted – with everyone jumping in the pool, fire eaters, and sexy violinists – don’t ring true, even by the standards of wealthy characters in classic literature like F. Scott Fitzgerald. King believes the show lacks authenticity.
Stephen King Slams Jon Hamm’s Your Friends & Neighbors As ‘Hollow’
Stephen King replied to crime writer Linwood Barclay after Barclay shared his negative opinion of the show on social media, writing, “I want to love Your Friends & Neighbours, but it feels empty and lacks heart.”
Stephen King’s criticism of “Your Friends & Neighbors” sparked debate on X. While some agreed with his assessment that the show lacked substance, others criticized him for being too harsh. One user compared the show to Taylor Sheridan’s other projects, acknowledging its flaws but suggesting it was better than some of his other work, writing, “I still enjoy the show, but it’s definitely overdone. When I think about shows like ‘Landman,’ though, ‘Your Friends & Neighbors’ actually feels pretty realistic.”
One X user felt that Your Friends & Neighbors felt more grounded than other reality shows about wealthy people, specifically comparing it to The Real Housewives of New Jersey. They pointed out that the drama and extravagance, like Teresa Giudice’s reported $500,000 wedding, were similar, suggesting the show wasn’t that far from reality.
Even if it’s not entirely true to life, Your Friends & Neighbors has proven to be a big success for Apple TV, and it’s continuing to improve. The first season earned a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 79% approval from critics, and an 89% audience score. Critics agree that the new season features compelling characters, with stars Hamm, Munn, and Marsden delivering standout performances.
Your Friends & Neighbors Already Scored a Season 3 Renewal
Even though King and Barclay aren’t fans of Your Friends & Neighbors, their online reviews haven’t discouraged Apple TV, which still sees a lot of promise in the series. In fact, before the new season even began in February,…
New episodes of Season 2 are released every Friday on Apple TV and the season is scheduled to finish on June 5th. Currently, three episodes are available, with a total of ten planned. You can also stream all nine episodes from Season 1 on Apple TV.
Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2 is now airing on Apple TV.
