Missing the clever, edgy humor of Bojack Horseman, the acclaimed animated series that finished in 2020? Prime Video has a new comedy that might be perfect for you. It’s created by Aubrey Plaza and Joe Wengert, who also co-created the original show, and it’s available to stream starting today.
Prime Video’s new animated series, Kevin, follows the adventures of Kevin the cat. He’s a pampered feline voiced by Jason Schwartzman who finds himself on the streets after his owners, Plaza and Wengert (who adopted him from a mob family!), unexpectedly break up. Kevin eventually seeks refuge at an animal rescue in Queens, where he befriends a quirky group of animals voiced by stars like Whoopi Goldberg, John Waters, Amy Sedaris, and Aparna Nancherla.
Does Kevin Have 9 Lives?
Reviews for the new show Kevin are mixed. Some critics enjoy it, with Screen Rant calling it a “memorable and fun” addition to Prime Video’s animated shows. However, others aren’t as impressed. RogerEbert’s Clint Worthington felt the show wasn’t compelling enough to continue after the first eight episodes. It’s still too early to tell if Kevin will reach the same level of success as BoJack Horseman.
It’s hard to say how well Kevin will do, but the idea behind the show is interesting. It also boasts a great lineup of guest stars, including Quinta Brunson, Charles Melton, Addison Rae, Tig Notaro, Nicole Byer, Patti LuPone, Debby Ryan, and Cary Elwes. Aubrey Plaza described pitching the series as a surreal experience, comparing it to an “acid trip.” She explained on The View that revisiting her past with her former partner, Joe, after 20 years – in a business meeting with Amazon, Netflix, and others – felt strangely therapeutic. The show is even inspired by their actual cat, Kevin, making the whole process incredibly personal and overwhelming for Plaza.
