Eddie Murphy Says ‘Beverly Hills Cop 5’ Is Not Happening Anytime Soon

Eddie Murphy recently returned to his iconic role as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, a new film released on Netflix in 2024. The movie marks his first adventure in 30 years and sees him reconnect with original cast members John Ashton, Judge Reinhold, and Bronson Pinchot. Joining them are new faces like Taylour Paige, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Kevin Bacon. The story brings Axel back to Beverly Hills when his daughter is in danger, quickly escalating into widespread chaos across Southern California.

Now that Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F has become a huge hit on Netflix, the big question is whether there will be a fifth movie. While fans hoping for another installment with Eddie Murphy and the team might be eager for more, it could be a while before we see a continuation of this classic story.

Eddie Murphy recently told Extra TV at the American Film Institute Life Achievement award ceremony that a fifth Beverly Hills Cop movie is unlikely to happen anytime soon, responding with multiple “no”s when asked about its possibility. He did, however, share positive news about Shrek 5, which is currently scheduled for release on June 30, 2027. Murphy also mentioned he’s working on a Shrek spin-off focusing on Donkey, marking the first time his character will be the main focus of a film.

Despite Eddie Murphy still being able to convincingly play Axel Foley over four decades after the first movie, there aren’t currently any plans for a fourth Beverly Hills Cop film. The last movie left Foley’s story open-ended, with him returning to Detroit after saving Captain Grant’s daughter and repairing their relationship. Sadly, John Ashton, who played Captain Grant, has passed away at age 75, joining other original cast members who are no longer with us. While there are many potential directions for a new story, fans will have to continue waiting to see what happens next with Axel Foley.

Eddie Murphy is thrilled to reprise his famous role as Donkey in Shrek 5 next year, and he’s also finally getting his own Donkey-focused movie, which has been in development for a while. The beloved comedian clearly isn’t ready to stop making big movies, though it’s uncertain if he’ll return to the Beverly Hills franchise.
