For decades, the Star Wars saga has featured battles between the Jedi and the Sith, representing the constant struggle between the light and dark sides of the Force. This conflict began when a group of Jedi broke away and embraced the dark side, leading to the rise of powerful Sith Lords. These lords have caused the deaths of many Jedi, with Emperor Palpatine being the most destructive, as he masterminded Order 66, which led to the near-total annihilation of the Jedi Order in his time.
For nearly five decades of Star Wars storytelling, we haven’t truly seen Jedi and Sith working as allies. The only situation where such a partnership would make sense is if they faced a common enemy even more dangerous than themselves. While the Jedi have occasionally made deals with the dark side to overcome powerful threats – like when Padawan Ezra Bridger briefly allied with Maul in Star Wars Rebels – those instances usually involved Jedi who weren’t fully devoted to the traditional Jedi Order. Now, the new Star Wars series, Maul – Shadow Lord, is finally exploring a genuine team-up between Jedi and Sith.
The Jedi & the Sith Are Working Together in Maul – Shadow Lord

It’s wild to think that the Jedi and Sith are kind of… cooperating! Apparently, a police droid named Two Boots reported Darth Maul’s activities on Janix, which led Darth Vader to send the Inquisitors there. This puts Maul and two Jedi Masters – Eeko-Dio Daki and his Padawan, Devon Izara – in serious trouble. But get this: in episode 6, Maul and Devon actually team up to fight the Inquisitors! It’s an amazing scene, really showing off how incredibly skilled both of them are, and they work together so smoothly. It makes sense, though, because they both understand how to fight alongside each other’s lightsaber styles.
As a movie fan, I’ve noticed something interesting about this team-up. It’s not just about what’s happening on the surface – Maul is actively trying to turn Devon to the dark side. He’s slowly positioning himself to replace her current mentor, basically trying to become the one guiding her. And honestly, it’s working! It’s easier for him because the Force is so messed up right now, all thanks to Palpatine’s Sith messing with everything. You can really see Devon starting to change, and it’s a little unsettling.
While Darth Maul is a formidable fighter, he doesn’t reach the level of Darth Vader. What makes the comic Maul – Shadow Lord so interesting is that it focuses on a villain who’s constantly outmatched by more powerful enemies – a Sith apprentice who didn’t quite succeed and is now trying to build his own power base. The story also explains why we rarely see Jedi and Sith working together, highlighting how their alliance is inherently flawed. The partnership between Maul and Devon disrupts the balance of the Force, and something has to give – either one of them will die, or they’ll both fall from power.
