Ana de Armas is firing on all cylinders on HBO Max.
Ana de Armas is a popular actress in Hollywood, known for her impressive work in a variety of films. She’s appeared in several action movies, alongside stars like Chris Evans in Ghosted, Daniel Craig in No Time to Die, and Ryan Gosling in The Gray Man. Her latest film didn’t do well in theaters, but it has become a big hit on streaming services, and features her acting with a well-known star of the action genre.
Ana de Armas’ action thriller, Ballerina, is currently the third most popular movie on HBO Max in the U.S. It’s being watched more than films like Companion (starring Jack Quaid), The Mummy Returns with Brendan Fraser, Christy featuring Sydney Sweeney, and the classic Twister. Currently, only The Mummy and Dust Bunny are performing better on the streaming service nationwide.
The movie Ballerina has actually surpassed The Devil Wears Prada in popularity on streaming, especially with the announcement of a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada coming on May 1st. Ballerina is a spinoff of the popular John Wick action series starring Keanu Reeves, who has appeared in four John Wick films. He makes a notable appearance in Ballerina alongside Ana de Armas’ character, Eve Macarro, sharing scenes with her throughout the movie.
Ballerina, a spin-off from the John Wick series, tells the story of Macarro. As a child, she witnessed her father’s murder, which led her to train relentlessly with the Ruska Roma and become a skilled assassin. The film follows Eve, played by Ana de Armas, as an adult on a violent quest for vengeance against her father’s killer.
Despite a $90 million production budget, the movie Ballerina needed to earn between $180 and $225 million at the box office to cover its costs. Unfortunately, it fell short, even with a cast including Ana de Armas, Keanu Reeves, Norman Reedus, Lance Reddick, Ian McShane, and others. According to Box Office Mojo, Ballerina ultimately grossed $140.2 million in theaters.
I just read ScreenRant’s review of Ballerina, and the critic, Rachel Labonte, gave it a 6 out of 10, describing it as a more over-the-top and fun version of the John Wick movies. It’s getting pretty good reviews overall – Rotten Tomatoes shows a 75% score from critics. Even though it didn’t make a ton of money at the box office, people who did see it really seemed to enjoy it, because the audience score is a fantastic 92%! I’m definitely more interested in checking it out now.
The positive reception to Ballerina likely explains its popularity on HBO Max in the United States. While a sequel hasn’t been officially announced yet, director Len Wiseman told Entertainment Weekly on June 6, 2025, that he specifically cast Norman Reedus with future plans in mind and expressed his desire to continue the story. The film’s success on HBO Max could pave the way for a follow-up.
