The hit video game Elden Ring is being adapted into a live-action film. A24 is developing the movie, and Alex Garland, known for directing Civil War, will write and direct it. So far, details about the movie’s story haven’t been released.
Bandai Namco Entertainment recently revealed the voice cast for the upcoming film, and it’s a remarkably talented group! The actors include Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, Nick Offerman, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz.
When Does the Elden Ring Movie Come Out?
The official Elden Ring Twitter account has announced that the Elden Ring movie will be released in theaters and IMAX on March 3, 2028. Filming will begin this spring. A24 will produce the movie, which is based on the popular game. It’s currently unknown whether the film will follow the game’s main storyline or explore the game’s history, a story famously co-written by George R.R. Martin of Game of Thrones.
Elden Ring Is Difficult To Pin Down
Elden Ring is a game that seems straightforward at first, but reveals layers of complexity the more you delve into it. Created by Hidetaka Miyazaki and featuring world-building contributions from George R. R. Martin, it came out in 2022 on most popular gaming systems and quickly proved to be a much larger experience than anticipated.
Elden Ring takes place in a vast world called the Lands Between, where you play as one of the Tarnished. Your goal is to restore the Elden Ring and become the Elden Lord. However, the game isn’t a straightforward journey. You’ll explore a huge open world on horseback, discovering hidden dungeons, crumbling ruins, and challenging bosses along the way – often without any warning!
Battles combine magic and sneaking, and there are many ways to win. You can charge in and fight, use spells, or simply avoid enemies altogether. As you play, you’ll collect runes, which serve as both money and a way to level up. Be warned though – you’ll lose these runes if you’re defeated, and players often find this frustrating.
It’s fascinating how Elden Ring was created. FromSoftware built upon the core gameplay of their Dark Souls series, but designed a much more open world. Meanwhile, George R.R. Martin contributed to the rich backstory. However, the story isn’t presented in a simple, direct way – it’s broken into pieces and often intentionally ambiguous. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the game was a huge success, winning numerous awards and selling over 30 million copies.
The Elden Ring Movie Might Run Into A Few Problems
One of the biggest challenges in adapting Elden Ring into a movie will likely be its storytelling. The game doesn’t explicitly tell you the story; instead, you have to figure it out yourself through exploration and clues. Characters like Melina provide hints, but they’re often mysterious, and the path to the Erdtree becomes increasingly complex as you progress.
The game’s structure is flexible, which is a good thing. Players aren’t forced to follow a set path and can explore optional areas or hidden secrets at their own pace, even if those don’t directly advance the main story. This freedom is enjoyable. However, the same approach in a movie could feel disjointed unless carefully crafted.
The way the game tells its story is also important. Elden Ring doesn’t offer a lot of explanation or dramatic build-up to big events – they often just happen. If the movie follows that same style, it would be different from most films. But if it adds more explanation, it risks becoming a more typical fantasy movie.
The game has several different endings based on the player’s decisions, from happy resolutions to total chaos. A movie, however, will have to pick just one. The way it does this – and what aspects of the story it highlights – will probably determine how well it stays true to the original game.
The Elden Ring movie is set for release on March 3, 2028.
