5. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Released in 2012, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning might not be everyone’s favorite fantasy RPG, but it’s definitely worth checking out. Although some of the gameplay feels a bit dated – there are a lot of quests that feel like those from online multiplayer games – Kingdoms of Amalur stands out as one of the few high fantasy games that really captures a bright, colorful, and even comforting atmosphere. It’s a wonderfully imaginative world, moving away from the dark and gritty style of games like Game of Thrones and Dark Souls, and instead offering the warmth and beauty found in Lord of the Rings and similar stories.

Despite its flaws, Kingdoms of Amalur is a fantastic fantasy RPG. It features excellent combat with diverse weapons, creepy environments, and plenty of monsters and factions. The game balances lighthearted and serious storylines, and it fully embraces classic fantasy elements at a time when many games were moving away from them. It’s a shame Kingdoms of Amalur wasn’t popular enough to get a sequel, as I would have loved to see where the story could have gone.

4. Fable 2

Like Kingdoms of Amalur, Fable 2 truly captures the feeling of a classic fantasy role-playing game. It’s charming and imaginative, filled with medieval European-style buildings, fantastical creatures, and a distinctly British sense of humor. But beyond its beautiful appearance, Fable 2 is notable for letting players make meaningful choices that impact the story – a groundbreaking feature then, and still impressive today. The game creates a deeply immersive world, with intricate systems working together to deliver a unique and unforgettable experience.

Fable 2 improves on the original game in every way, and even surpasses its follow-up. It gives players a remarkable amount of freedom, comparable to games like The Elder Scrolls, but in many key areas, it’s actually better. Fable 2 is essential playing – not only to see how the Fable series evolved, but also to experience a truly exceptional fantasy RPG.

3. Dragon Age: Origins

Okay, so Dragon Age: Origins might not be the prettiest game to look at these days, but honestly, it’s still one of the best RPGs ever made, period. What really makes it special is the characters. You actually get to know them, build real connections, and care about what happens to them throughout the whole game. It’s no surprise Dragon Age became such a huge franchise – the writing is just fantastic and makes those characters so memorable. They keep showing up in the newer games, which is awesome, but they’re at their absolute best in Origins. Seriously, I still think about those guys all the time.

Aside from compelling characters and a strong story – which are the most crucial parts of any role-playing game, in my opinion – Dragon Age: Origins truly shines with its detailed world, well-crafted quests, and engaging combat. The combat system can be a little challenging to learn, but once you do, it’s incredibly rewarding, especially thanks to the smart enemy designs and satisfying character progression. Dragon Age: Origins is a major reason why the series became so popular and is considered a classic – it really helped push the RPG genre forward at a significant pace.

2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Any game in The Elder Scrolls series could easily be considered one of the best, and many fans might even prefer others over Skyrim. While Skyrim has been criticized for being simpler than older games like Morrowind, losing some depth and detail, I believe this simplicity is actually its strength. It makes the game incredibly enjoyable, especially for newcomers to the RPG genre, and it highlights what Skyrim does best, making it a truly essential fantasy RPG.

While Morrowind and Oblivion have more complex combat and magic systems, mastering them takes a significant time commitment that not all players will enjoy. Skyrim, on the other hand, provides a strong and fun experience right away. It also boasts a far more immersive world with unique and rewarding locations to discover, which is a major reason why it’s considered one of the greatest open-world games ever made. Though Skyrim might not be as deep of a role-playing game as earlier titles, it’s a better fantasy open-world experience overall, and that makes it a game everyone should try.

1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

No list of the best fantasy RPGs would be complete without mentioning The Witcher 3. While some of its gameplay elements aren’t as polished as those in newer games, The Witcher 3 is still a fantastic example of storytelling, writing, and quest design. Everyone’s already talked a lot about what makes The Witcher 3 so good, so I’ll keep it brief. Despite its dark and often serious tone, the game truly understands that a great fantasy world – or any great story, really – needs to be vibrant, detailed, and full of wonder, with moments of lightness to balance the hero’s difficult journey. While it can be frustrating at times, and the final part of the game is confusing if you haven’t read the Witcher books or played the earlier games, The Witcher 3 is still an amazing fantasy RPG – a real marvel of a video game – and a reminder of how rare truly great games in this genre are.
