Netflix’s Beef initially gained popularity with its first season in 2023, but the changes introduced in the highly anticipated second season, released in 2026, really demonstrate what it takes for a streaming show to succeed. The show, which unexpectedly became a hit when it first premiered, stars Ali Wong (known from Fresh Off the Boat) as Amy Lau and Steven Yeun (Invincible) as Danny Cho. Beef surprised audiences and critics alike with its unique mix of comedy, dark drama, and thrilling mystery – defying typical genre boundaries.
The series revolves around a simple road rage incident that quickly spirals out of control between two people, Danny and Amy. Their escalating feud consumes their lives, leading them to increasingly ridiculous actions. Featuring a strong ensemble cast including Joseph Lee, Maria Bello, Kelvin Han Yee, and Ashley Park, Beef was recognized with an Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
The announcement of Beef season 2 was already great news, but the show’s creators then revealed an exciting change. What started as a limited series would become an anthology, meaning each season would feature a completely new story and cast within the same world. Season 2 took full advantage of this, bringing in Cailee Spaeny (from Civil War), Charles Mellon (May December), Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewelyn Davis), and Carey Mulligan (Shame) to play the two couples at the center of the new conflict.
Beef Has Been A Major Success With Critics And Audiences For Netflix
After Beef won a Golden Globe, I can totally see why the creators might have thought about doing a second season with Amy and Danny. But seeing Adolescence win the same award this year really makes me think they made the right choice by not continuing that story. It proves that taking risks and trying something new is often the better path.
Similar to other limited series dealing with the impact of crime, Adolescence is a notably more subdued and deliberate show than Beef. The creators, mirroring a strategy used by Beef, have already confirmed that a second season won’t continue the existing storyline; instead, it will feature a completely new set of characters and a fresh story to maintain the quality of the first season.
This is a clever approach because it lets each season of these shows feature a completely new cast while also wrapping up existing storylines naturally. Though shows like Beef and Adolescence are quite different, they both tell complete stories within a single season. Since the first seasons didn’t set up continuing plots, turning the series into an anthology was a brilliant decision.
Beef’s Transition From Miniseries To Anthology Points The Way Forward For Streaming
The choice to make Beef an anthology series is a smart move that other streaming shows should consider. It’s a format already proven successful by HBO’s The White Lotus, which features a new location each season while still maintaining a common thread – in that show’s case, a chain of resorts.
Each season of The White Lotus feels fresh and engaging, like a witty murder mystery in season one, and a more serious character exploration in season three. The show consistently features talented actors, and by introducing a new cast each time, it avoids repeating storylines and keeps things interesting. This anthology format, also seen in shows like Beef, allows for both standalone, well-crafted stories and the development of a larger, interconnected world that grows with each new season.
