The classic JRPG Wild Arms 4, originally released in 2005, is becoming available this week on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers.
This is an unusual release for the platform, as most of their recent retro game offerings have come from Bandai Namco and Disney, rather than being developed directly by the platform holder themselves.
Interestingly, PlayStation didn’t originally publish the game outside of Japan. Instead, Xseed handled it in North America and 505 Games released it in Europe. Unfortunately, the versions in both regions had a lot of problems, including a bug that made it impossible to fully complete the game.
Reviews were particularly brutal upon release as well.
Simon Parkin, a well-known writer, gave the game a very negative review for Eurogamer years ago, calling it “consistently average” and “insipid” and ultimately giving it a score of 4 out of 10.
He wrote:
This game is easily dismissed as just okay. It functions, but its attempts at being new feel uninspired and incomplete. While it looks decent and provides some entertainment, it probably won’t surprise its dedicated fans. However, should we keep accepting this calculated averageness? Maybe it’s time for a truly honest critique, considering the game itself constantly judges actions with a simplistic and immature moral code.
1Up was highly critical, with Jeremy Parish calling the game inconsistent – sometimes unique and interesting, and other times cliché and boring. Official PlayStation Magazine went even further, describing the JRPG as simply annoying.
However, IGN offered a brighter perspective. Editor Jeremy Dunham stood out by giving the game a mostly positive review, scoring it 7.8 out of 10.
He noted:
Wild ARMs features a charming cast, stunning graphics—the best in the series yet—and genuinely enjoyable puzzles and exploration. It’s a shame the promising combat system is held back by unbalanced enemies and weak artificial intelligence. Despite this, it’s still a solid RPG offering over 40 hours of gameplay and a refreshing alternative to more common titles in the genre.
Despite the generally negative reviews, there’s some optimism surrounding this release. It will be interesting to see how audiences react to it now.
