Blizzard hasn’t said much about the future of its sci-fi strategy game series, StarCraft, but reports suggest they may be developing a shooter set in the same world. According to Jez Corden of Windows Central, Blizzard is reportedly striving for a visual style inspired by the detailed, pre-rendered cutscenes from StarCraft 2, and is moving away from the look of Overwatch 2.
I was really excited to hear that Drew Murray, a super experienced designer, joined Blizzard back in January 2026! And then, Corden started talking about what the new StarCraft shooter might look like, based on a sneak peek he got at an early version. He said they’re building an amazing team for it, which is great, but honestly, what really got me hyped was just seeing StarCraft again – the Terrans, the Zerg, everything! It brought back so many memories and it looks like it’s going to be awesome.
The game’s graphics were remarkably realistic. Unlike titles like Overwatch or even StarCraft 2, which have a distinct stylized look, this game aimed for the high-quality realism seen in StarCraft 2‘s cinematic trailers. If you imagine a scale from highly realistic—like Diablo 4—to very stylized—like Overwatch—this game definitely leaned much closer to the realistic side. It felt less like the colorful, Pixar-inspired style of Overwatch and more like a playable version of the impressive cinematics from StarCraft 2.
So, I got a look at some early footage, and honestly, it was pretty rough around the edges. The guy I was talking to wasn’t even sure how early in development it was – it could have just been a test version. He assured me it’s going to look way better when it actually comes out, though. As for when Blizzard will officially announce the game, they’ve been dropping hints. They keep calling StarCraft one of their main focuses, even putting it on swag in the BlizzCon press kits. It’s pretty clear they still see StarCraft as a big deal for their company.
Blizzard previously announced Murray’s hiring on LinkedIn, and reports surfaced earlier this month – also by Corden – suggesting he’d be working on the StarCraft game.
Okay, so the rumors are getting stronger! It sounds like Blizzard might not be developing the new game completely on their own. Apparently, they’re teaming up with Nexon, a big Korean developer, and development has already really kicked off. I’m hearing that Blizzard actually sent a team over to Nexon’s studio that specializes in shooter games – that’s pretty interesting!
The most recent major release in the StarCraft series was StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void, which came out in 2015. It concluded a story that began with Wings of Liberty in 2010, and continued with Heart of the Swarm in 2013. Since then, Blizzard has kept the game alive with occasional updates and new content, and even made the core game free to play, letting players experience the Wings of Liberty campaign and multiplayer modes.
