A Criminally Underrated Dreamworks Movie is Now on Peacock (& It’s Actually Really Good)

I’ve been a big fan of DreamWorks movies for years, and they’ve made so many amazing films that really changed animation. But it’s a shame some of their best work doesn’t get the attention it deserves – maybe they didn’t do so well in theaters, or they came out around the time of huge hits like Shrek or How to Train Your Dragon. I was so excited to hear that one of those overlooked gems just became available on Peacock, and I think everyone should give it a watch – it’s seriously underrated!

I have to admit, I totally missed Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken when it came out last summer. It’s about this really relatable, awkward teen who finds out she’s descended from a whole line of powerful kraken warriors – basically, she’s meant to protect the oceans! Sadly, it didn’t do so well in theaters, only making around $46 million worldwide on a $70 million budget. It ended up being a pretty big loss for DreamWorks Animation, actually their second lowest-grossing film ever. But honestly, it’s a really good animated movie, and I’m glad it’s finally available on Peacock as of April 20th so more people can check it out!

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken Was Unfairly Dismissed

While Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken didn’t draw huge crowds like some other DreamWorks movies, it’s still a good film overall. It faced challenges with marketing and came out during a busy summer movie season alongside popular films like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and the live-action The Little Mermaid. Despite this, critics gave it a respectable 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences loved it even more, giving it an 81% approval rating.

“Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” is a fun and relatable movie for the whole family. It tells the story of Ruby, a teenager dealing with everyday high school challenges and a protective mom, but who also discovers she’s destined to be a powerful warrior. The film offers a fresh take on sea mythology, portraying Krakens as the good guys and mermaids as the villains! Beyond the exciting story, the movie boasts beautiful, colorful animation – think a vibrant, underwater Lisa Frank world – and maintains the high quality DreamWorks is known for. While it might not be a cinematic masterpiece, it’s an enjoyable and heartwarming film that deserves a wider audience.

Other Family-Friendly Movies Now on Peacock

Peacock has added a bunch of new titles, including the DreamWorks film Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. Starting April 1st, subscribers can also enjoy classics like Bee Movie, the first three Kung Fu Panda movies, and The Prince of Egypt. Plus, Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat is now available, giving families even more movie choices.
