Fans were excited to see Jessica Jones return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, but her appearance in the latest episode felt underwhelming.
In March, showrunner Dario Scardapane explained to TopMob that the Disney+ series needed to reach a specific point in the storyline before bringing the missing character back – to ensure it felt natural and logical.
Vanessa Fisk’s death last week seemed to be the final straw, pushing her husband, Wilson Fisk (the Kingpin, now Mayor), to an even more volatile state – and that’s remarkable considering how unpredictable he already was.
Driven by reckless behavior, Mayor Fisk dispatches his task force against vigilantes to Jessica’s house in the suburbs, where she lives with her daughter, Danielle, and, likely, her super-powered boyfriend, Luke Cage (played by Mike Colter, who hasn’t appeared yet).
The beginning is amusing, with funny scenes of bad guys being defeated in the background while Danielle is lost in thought. However, it feels sudden and doesn’t quite connect to what’s happening.

Even though the show dedicated five episodes to setting up this character’s return, the writers abruptly brought her back in the last few episodes without explaining her reappearance.
Despite cracking down on vigilantes in New York City, Kingpin hasn’t said anything about Jessica Jones or her previous allies, Luke Cage and Danny Rand. This silence suggests his actions weren’t really about stopping masked heroes, but about controlling anyone who opposed him.
Why would he, at his worst moment, unexpectedly lash out at Jessica? She personally disapproves of taking the law into one’s own hands because of a difficult experience in her past, and she now works as a private detective.
The situation becomes even more surprising when Jessica unexpectedly appears with Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) on a rooftop. He’s fully dressed as Daredevil, in plain sight, and it’s unclear how she even found or reached him.

I’m not suggesting the writers get bogged down in tiny details, but adding these specifics would help show us what Matt and Jessica’s relationship is like now, since we haven’t seen them together on screen for ten years.
Even in the team-up series The Defenders, Jessica Jones and her allies thought Matt Murdock died in a building collapse, and they haven’t interacted since—at least, not until recently. Despite this significant past event, that storyline isn’t being followed up on.
After he almost died, did their friendship recover? Do they usually stay in touch? If they do, why hasn’t she contacted him since Fisk gained control? The story doesn’t address these important questions, leaving the audience confused and searching for answers.
Since The Defenders is an older series – many viewers of the new Born Again show might not even be familiar with it – it makes sense that the writers want to quickly establish the current storyline without getting bogged down in details from the past.

However, the reunion felt forced and like it only existed to please fans. It also conveniently coincided with Michael C. Hall being in New York City to film the Dexter revival.
The show could have naturally included Jessica Jones in season 2, making her return feel more intentional and impactful, rather than like a last-minute addition.
In the third episode, Daredevil and his team raided Kingpin’s secret, makeshift prison. There, they found people held captive in terrible conditions – mostly innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire, though the show referred to them as ‘vigilantes’.
I wasn’t the only one hoping Jessica would be rescued here, so she could join Daredevil’s fight against Kingpin. It would give her a strong reason to help – she was wrongly imprisoned and separated from her daughter.

It’s not really clear if Wilson Fisk’s supposed crackdown on vigilantes has actually harmed anyone besides White Tiger, who was killed by one of Fisk’s officers in the first season, and the character Swordsman, who only appeared briefly.
Meanwhile, Daredevil is still operating, though he’s keeping a low profile. The Punisher managed to get away, setting the stage for his own future story, and Spider-Man appears completely unaffected, based on the trailer for Brand New Day.
If Fisk had successfully held one of the former Defenders – like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, or Danny Rand – captive, his main campaign promise might have seemed a little more believable. But right now, his attempts to control the city are just becoming laughable.
As a big fan, I was really thrilled to see Daredevil and Jessica Jones team up and quickly disrupt another one of Kilgrave’s plans. It also gave Erin Ritter, who plays the character, a fantastic, well-deserved action scene – honestly, it felt like the first time we really got to see her in action as the character!
It’s disappointing to realize that this scene also reveals Jessica’s powers are now inconsistent after having her baby, Danielle.
The main character’s incredible strength and ability to withstand damage, normally enough to easily defeat enemies, is now failing intermittently and unpredictably.
This feels like a forced plot point designed to manufacture drama in a weak storyline, and it also seems intended to make sure Daredevil remains the most impressive fighter in his own series.
Hopefully, the show will correct this strange decision next season. Leaked photos from the set indicate that Ritter, Colter, and Jones will all be appearing, which could finally give this overlooked Marvel team the opportunity to really shine.
