Does Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Really Need a Remake?

The Assassin’s Creed franchise has consistently been successful for Ubisoft, becoming one of their most reliable titles. Recently, however, the series’ future has become a little uncertain following several major changes within the company. Unlike some older franchises like Prince of Persia, which have had planned games cancelled, Assassin’s Creed continues to move forward with multiple projects in development.

While a remake of the beloved Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – titled Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynched – is on the way after 13 years, it feels like an odd move for the series. Black Flag is considered one of the best installments, but revisiting the past instead of pushing forward with new ideas could be a worrying sign for the future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

Assassin’s Creed Is At Its Best With Black Flag — And It Doesn’t Need Any Fixing

The Assassin’s Creed series has had its ups and downs – I’ve often found myself feeling conflicted about it. While I appreciate the freedom the games give you to approach missions in your own way, and the historical settings and exciting action are well done, I’ve always struggled with the overall story, repetitive tasks, and overly dramatic atmosphere. That changed when I played Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Its open world, combined with the feeling of discovery and adventure that came with sailing the high seas during the Golden Age of Piracy, finally made me truly enjoy the series.

This game truly shines when you’re free to explore the world and build your pirate reputation, instead of just following the main story missions. Even over ten years after its release, it remains visually appealing and plays incredibly well – so well, in fact, that a remake feels unnecessary. While the game isn’t perfect, its flaws are minor and less noticeable than in other entries in the series. Black Flag feels complete, as if the developers fully realized their vision. Despite originally being released on older consoles, the graphics still look good today. A visual update might be nice, but it’s hard to see what Ubisoft could add to truly justify a full remake.

I Wish Assassin’s Creed Was Moving Forward Instead Of Looking Backwards

The Assassin’s Creed series is currently at a turning point. Following some changes within Ubisoft, the franchise is exploring several different options. These include a remake of Black Flag, the single-player game Assassin’s Creed: Hexe, a player-versus-player multiplayer game called Assassin’s Creed: Invictus, and a mobile game, Assassin’s Creed: Jade. This wide range of projects suggests Ubisoft is still figuring out the best path forward for the series, experimenting with different types of gameplay.

Hexe stands out as the most intriguing installment so far, hinting at supernatural elements and a new historical setting that could bring a fresh take to the popular Assassin’s Creed series. The positive reception to Assassin’s Creed Shadows proves players are eager for this kind of innovation, and Hexe’s development suggests Ubisoft is committed to continuing it. This willingness to experiment is what led to the success of Black Flag, which introduced new features and changes that revitalized the franchise.

The latest direction of the Assassin’s Creed series, with Hexe, is exciting and shows promise, especially because the games are strongest when they try innovative things. However, I’m concerned that remaking Black Flag will hinder that progress. While Black Flag is a great game and still easily accessible, revisiting the past instead of forging ahead feels like a step back for a franchise that shines when it’s original. Even though I enjoy Edward Kenway’s story, I don’t want to replay it. I sometimes struggle to stay fully invested in each new Assassin’s Creed game, but I really appreciate it when the series takes bold risks with new settings, like with Shadows or Syndicate. I’d prefer remakes not become the main focus; I hope the series continues to evolve. I don’t need a remake to remember how much I love Black Flag.
